Definitely not the real thing (Lombardy-Venetia 5 Lire) but not neccessarily a counterfeit. I get asked about these a couple times a year and haven't been able to dig up much of anything on it. Perhaps a souvenir or token for a donation. One person even told me he thinks his came from a cereal box long ago.

This is the first I've seen. Didn't realize they were common? Can't say it crossed my mind that it would be a souvenir piece either.. but I wondered for a moment if it might have been some revolutionary secret handshake sort of thing (even more far out) with the purposely butchered legends. I've been crabby all day, thus the title and cynical take.

Have you ever seen one in person, or would you be able to wager a guess on age? Think the legends might actually mean something? I'm kinda curious now

My guess is Tbirde has a few of them filed away (the scans look like his too).

It's not a forgery. I can't remember the details, but there was a long thread on one of these several years ago.
