Cherrypicking through my own saved nickels and... I've got a question!

DD Posts: 1,997 ✭✭✭
Well, so far I've found one 1950D, three 1951S and no really cool varieties, so my question is, what are some popular pre-1964 varietys for nickels? I've been saving pre-1964 nickels since I was a little kid and didn't know much about collecting, apparently I still don't image.

Also, when a nickel is struck on a copper planchet, is it much thinner/smaller in diameter or does it still kind of mash down to almost normal size? I've got an odd sized brown nickel I'm staring at right now. (From 1940)

There are a lot of doubled dies in the jefferson series. Some fun ones to look for: 1954 d/s s/d, 1943/2, 1943 ddr, and enough to fill an entire book I bought last year. image

JT Stanton's Cherrypickers guide (Vol 1. - the only one currently available) covers Cents through Nickels with photos. If you don't have one, it's worth it to ID your finds.

Best of luck with the hunt!

Thanks, I'll definately check it out, some of the coins I've looked under had somewhat of an odd look under a loupe so I'll definately have to get the book! (I'm not much of an error guy as of yet image)
