1978 Topps Baseball box break......

Just got in a brand spanking new never-been-touched-by-human-hands case fresh 1978 Topps baseball box from Steve Hart at the BBCexchange. Let me preface by saying that if you read softparade's box bust, he was exactly right about the condition of these cards. They are coming out clean and sharp, with centering and print marks the only real issues. I got about 50 cards that I will send to PSA, only sending commons with a reasonable shot at a 10. Here's what I got (scans later):

LOTS AND LOTS OF DOUBLES. AND NOT THE GOOD ONES. BAD ONES............ 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10......... Ok, I'm calm now.

I just kept getting the same coallation codes over and over again, with the same commons and semis. About ten packs left and the best cards in terms of star value I have up to that point are two George Brett's, two Nolan Ryan RBs, and a Nolan Ryan LL. Then I finally pull a decently centered Molitor/Trammell with very sharp corners...... AND A GREAT BIG CHUNK OF GUM STUCK TO THE BACK.... AHHHHHHHH........AHHHHHHHHHH................ That was my Sam Kinnison impression. I'll be here all week........ I managed to ease the gum off the card fairly cleanly, but there's a moderate stain on the back. Fockers. After that, nothing exciting except a couple Jack Morris RCs (one nice enough for my personal collection). All in all, I'm going to need a mountain of help from the PSA gods to get even close to what I spent on this set-builder's nightmare. It's like I bought half a box, then cloned it, except for the Mollie/Trammell of course. However, on first glance, it looks like I got some nice stars that should grade 9, and maybe a 10 or two. We shall see. I'll post scans later.

    The box I broke did not have the dupes you are mentioning Lee, I would think they came from the same case. No #400 Nolan Ryan? This is a card that I have noticed was not pulled by me or Novocent.

    Lee, that is an awesome Eck. Your Molitor has the same BLUE nose on Mickey Klutts as the card I pulled and the smudge is of the same smudginess image

    I pulled the Eck from my box, although not centered as nice as yours which has 10 potential IMO.

    Don't jinx me like that. I'll scan a few more of the nicer ones I pulled a little later. Anybody looking for raw singles out of this set? If you need one or two commons I'll send them out at no cost.

  • The centering on the Molitor is great, too bad about the gum stain.

    that was me, and Jackson Todd is a tough tough card in this set. The first PSA 9 on record was just submitted by someone on these boards. Not many 8's either ......

    Gloss is great soft. If I can do well in the grading, I'll probably buy another box. Check out this Warren Brustar, or as I like to call him, "The Scariest Man in the History of the World".

    What a great thread; I love the 78s! 78 was my first year collecting. If I ever get around to it, I will take pictures of my 78 Topps cards displays hanging on the wall in my office. I would love to bust a wax box myself but am saving up for grading on my 71 set. Maybe I will try to pick up a couple of rack packs on eBay. You guys have any recommendations of sellers for rack on eBay? It appears neither BBCexchange or the Kid have 78 racks for sale right now.

    Mefer, bballcards04 is a very reliable seller of rack packs on e-bay IMO. I have had good experiences buying packs from them. They always have 2-4 rack packs up, as soon as one group ends another goes up.

    thanks for the posts! great molitor rookies, real nice centering. and eck on the tribe! oh the memories. its been very hard not buying one of those boxes from bbc but i may break down tonight. i just dont know what i am going to do with all those extras after i open everything and pull 30 for grading.

    bbcards04 is who i purchased the 81 donruss wax from that was horrible. the seller may have had no idea of the condition and was just consigning or selling from another source. make sure to ask about condition of the packs if you are purchasing unopened wax. you can usually tell rack condition from the scans.

    You have some great pulls there! Too bad about the Molitor - looks great otherwise!
    The Morris RC is so typical - I have like 10 of them and none are centered perfectly!

    I don't care about the blue nose, but the smudge is nasty. Not to mention the BIG GUM STAIN ON BACK! 36 OUT OF 504 CARDS HAVE GUM AND THE BEST CARD I PULL IS ONE OF THEM! AHHHHHHH! AHHHHHHHHH!......... Sorry, Sam Kinnison came back again. Actually, I'd be willing to bet that the blue nose wouldn't keep the card from being a PSA 10 if there was nothing else wrong with the card. However, I think the blue nose and smudge come hand in hand. They're like peas and carrots, just like me and Jenny.

    Lee, the smudge is notorious and well documented with the 78 Molitor, but that Klutts blue nose just pissed me off when I pulled mine. The centering on mine is just about PERFECT and along with the smudge comes a BLUE NOSE Klutts image

    Not worth grading IMO image
