Would a 1938 D/D Buffalo in UNC be.....

worth getting slabbed? (Its a very pretty Buff with light golden brown toning and no wear). And if so, by which grading organization? Not interested in who grades it the highest...I would want it graded right if I sent it in. I hear about people cracking open previously graded coins and re-submitting them to another house hoping for a higher grade. Doesnt that take away from the legitimacy of the grading process and if the the houses dont agree on what a coin is...then why is that so much better than anybody elses opinion?

Maybe I am just nieve or too much of a newbie...just trying to learn. Thanks!!!

Even as an MS66, it would only be worth approximately $60, so the grading fee would be a very high % of the value. Sight-unseen, I'd recommend keeping it as is.
  • I didn't think that it was very rare, although I haven't seen much info on it. Thanks for the advice...I will leave it like it is.

There are currently 8 rpm's in the CONECA listings for 1938d/d Buff. None are in Cherrtpickers, so no additional premium there. ANACS would probably slab with the attribution on the label. If you are wanting to sell, you might get more with it slabbed and attributed, but as Mark said the fee should be considered. If you are just holding, you must decide whether you like it raw or slabbed. Before I started attributing my varieties, I liked having the slab with attribution. Now that I am sure of the ID, raw is fine.

  • WOW!! Lots of good info there!! Thank You!! I guess I will leave it raw, although I would like the attribution from a grading house, but by the time I spent the money to have it graded and what I already have in it...it would be about a wash. I plan on hanging on to it. Its a pretty coin. I think I need to go get some books. Looks like this hobby may stick. LOL

You can send it to C.O.N.E.C.A or to NCADD for attribution. They will usually attribute them for under $10 and if you join even cheaper!

They wont grade it or seal it in plastic but you would at least have an attribution! C.O.N.E.C.A. will send it on to ICG for about $20 more!

These are far more common that most collectors realize. With a little effort, you can usually find a slabbed 1938-D with an unattributed D/D. I have a PCGS MS67 with an unattributed D/D.

Also, like coinguy1 noted, unless the coin grades MS67, it isn't really a good idea to bother submitting it.

  • MS67...I bet that is a beauty!!!!! My best slabbed is a 1938 D Buffalo in PCGS MS64. I like it!! Not sure why..kind of been collecting inexpensive coins on and off for some time, but all of a sudden, I cant seem to get enough Buffalos!! LOL I have been drooling at the mouth over some of the toned ones I have seen on here. Very Nice!!!

MS67 Buffalos are either blindingly bright, have beautiful toning, or both. A definite treat!

  • Have a pic of any of the above? Would love to see one!!

I do, but you really have to see one in person to truely appreciate it. And when you do, it'll suddenly become a "must have" coin.

  • It kinda feels like that already....so the search begins.

Quite true ... tho' the best one I have is MS65 ... just couldn't resist the toning. Nice even steel blue on both sides of the coin. Bought it for long term keeps, so the cost of slabbing really didn't bother me ... same with the MS66 D/D that is in my collection.
