Player set collectors - speedier adds to sets?

How can we get new cards added to Master Player sets more quickly. I know things are busy but its become really difficult to keep up with what Ive got and what I need. Other look at my sets and are sending cards to be graded based on needs there.

Is there an option for quicker service here? Id love it if there was!

I think it is a very low priority for them overall. I don't know if there is a solution.

I just had a card added that was requested on 11/9/04. I don't think there is much we can do - unless you can convince Joe O. or some head honcho that there is a good business reason to have his excellent team of Cosetta, Gayle and BJ shift their priorities.

I guess the only consolation I have is that most of the player set additions will slow down significantly in the next year or two, as there will be fewer and fewer examples to add.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • In order to keep track of the cards I need added to my Wade Boggs and Bo Jackson master sets, I have created "Collector Showcase" corresponding sets. You can add any card to the "Collector Showcase" and I have found this to be a good way to track my needed additions.

    See for example this set.

With regard to getting the cards added quicker, I agree with Mikeschmidt. I wish there was a better and quicker way, but I don't know of any.

PSA has to balance spending time between adding new set requests and adding to existing player or specialty sets. I'm not sure which most members of this board would regard as a higher priority.

I had to create an Excel file to keep track of the Trammell cards that I have requested to be added. It takes months, and I keep finding more to add. I do like the showcase idea.

  • It makes it tough for me personally because I lose alot of the desire to add to my sets. Ive got stacks of cards that I have to separate:

    *Submitted X date (20+ cards)
    *and another
    *needs spec #s etc

I wish when a new card is graded for a player it would automatically be added to the Master player set. Seems logical. Then all we'd have to wait for is a spec # for first card added.

Love the service and the registry, just makes it tough when Im waiting several months. Idea = INTERNS image

  • Player sets are the most complex and therefore the most time-consuming PSA Registry entities. With full company sets, the cards are readily defined and weighted. Pretty much the same applies to the team sets within the company sets. However, with player sets, you've got (a) cards from many different company sets, (b) weightings that must correlate to the breadth of the player set rather than the company set, and (c) a typically never-ending expansion of the set. Heck, decades after these guys are retiring, we're still discovering new cards produced during their playing years. We'll still be adding cards to the Mickey Mantle Master Set 25 years from now. The fat lady will never sing for the Master Sets!
  • thats the thing, there is no issue with 'weightings' for my sets. Just getting cards added.

  • This may be a far too simplistic view of this issue, but how difficult would it be for PSA (upon grading the card) to develop a computer program that would corrolate a players years of active playing and instantly recognize the issue as a Master set addition? I am not a 'puter dude but is kind of sound simple to me. As far as weighting, I am not certain how that could be addressed...maybe just weights of ones for modern players, my Molitor master collection is comprised of ~200 with the vast majority (~98%) being 10's but the time to add to the Master set is agonizingly long, I am in the same shape as the Trammell dude with trying to keep up with what I have and what I need.

  • Hey Mike,

You are killing me on Bo auctions. I hope there are a bunch coming that you don't need. Great sets you are putting together.

  • Brent,

You are still ahead of me in both, however. Hasn't been too many cards that have come up lately. I will probably get a bunch graded myself in the next $5 special. Hopefully, I have a few 1990 and earlier cards I can submit under the spring training $5 special. Going to start looking through my collection over the next week.

Much of the problem on Master Sets for retired players consists of getting cards added that are other than the player's regular card from a set (League Leaders, Highlights, etc.). That may not be easy to do from a computer program, because the player's name would need to be input manually for each such card into the program.

  • I guess I had wished that the setup of their database wouldve been a bit more easily set up on the back end for administration. Still waiting.

  • In regards to the automatic add idea for the master set. Another problem arises when the same card is entered into their system in 2 different ways. Therefore creating 2 seperate cards. although they are in fact the same. This also throws off the pop reports as well.

From what I understand, they are still adding cards from November. The easiest solution would be to add cards to the various sets as new examples are graded. In addition, there should be a way where we can add our own cards. There is no easy solution, but it's obvious that something needs to change. I'm currently waiting on over 50 Marino cards to be added....

  • I still think that PSA should make the effort to have their database contain the most comprehensive and accurate listing of cards possible, whether graded examples exist or not. Then they can could easily sort and merge any set that they want to create, with ease then. The upkeep would be in any changes to the master list, if needed, and any updates could be quickly pushed to any respective sets that require them. It's a database thing, but that's just me. I actually would love for a master set to contain ALL cards, graded or not, so I know what the real challenge is. But again, that's me.

This being said, I am sure it is much more complicated that what I envision. But I do know that adding as you go will take a lot more time, money and hassle, then just getting the foundation setup right in the first place, and building off that. Again, just me...
