Forum advice requested

I have the opportunity to purchase a very nice set of coins from San Marino which comprises the entire 19th century type set from that country. Only six coins, all either AU or UNC, raw. The coins are beautiful and original, 5, 10, 50 centisimi, and 1, 2, and 5 lira with mintages as low as 10,000 to 280,000. The set would run $600 to $700 (price to be negotiated).

My concern is their relative value If I decide to sell at some point in the future. San Marino is a small (very) country which may have limited collector appeal (which would limit their resale value) but being located in Italy (a country I'm trying to type set) these coins should be valuable to any Italian collector (I assume).

Normally resale value of coins does not concern me because mostly I limit myself to a max value per coin of about $100, but in this case it does worry me a little.

Can anyone provide any insight as to their projected selling and/or resale value, as well as their place in the pantheon of rare coins?

  • I think it could easily be resold given the rarity and the fact that it seems San Marino coins sell well on eBay - the Euros anyway. But I'm sure if you post them on eBay with the words L@@K or RARE or MONSTER TONING in the title it'll be fine.

I've found San Marino to be an OK seller. Not as good as the regular Italian stuff, but not bad, so you should come out OK as long as you buy smart. I'll try to get an actual selling estimate this evening.

Make absolutely sure the coins are all there - problem coins will hurt you financially. You may want to think about getinthem slabbed beforehand.

That would probably drive the selling price upwards-I can understand that condition is all-important, given the money involved-the 5 lira is $350 as AU. I will endeavor to get photographs to show the forum; $600 to $700, even for 6 coins (the 5 lira is $350 as AU) while not a lot of money for some single coins I see here is still a lot of money for me.

This is a chance for me (as a non-slabber) to walk the walk (albeit not without the advice of some knowledgeable forum members).image

    There I have not ventured,
    nor would I this construe.

    OK, lets see...

The set comprises six coins and I'll assume we're talking about a common date of each. Let's start with the catalog values in VF, XF and UNC (to the nearest dollar):

    5c: $7; $20; $50
    10c: $8; $25; $60
    50c: $20; $30; $60
    1L: $30; $50; $95
    2L: $50; $110; $200
    5L: $135; $225; $425 (beautiful coin, BTW)

The catalog is pretty accurate when buying 19th century Italy and 20th century San Marino so I'll assume these prices are reasonable.

Usually I can buy similar stuff from a dealer as follows: lower grade uncs about 80% of UNC catalog, problem free AUs for a touch over XF catalog and problem AUs for about VF catalog. (selling them certified in these grades will bring about the same prices on e-bay, and raw perhaps a third less). In that case a fair price for the set (including a little take them all discount) might be $700, $450, $250 for lower UNCs, nice AUs and problem AUs, respectively. If you really love the coins ~20% higher prices are in order as they are truly unusual.

Clearly, you need to buy these smart or you run the very real risk of being buried forever in the coins.
Since most of the value of the set is in the 2L and 5L pay special attention to these coins and make absolutely sure they are as advertised.

Hope this helps, I'd be interested in any other forum members comments on the above.

Thanks JamminJ, they are a good looking set-I'll try to get photos as I mentioned... If I can't, I'll display my mistake or success when and if I make the purchase.image
