David,
This is a quote from one of you answers to someone elses question.
"Rubbing a proof coin would be an extremely bad idea...you will definitely cause hairlines.
Gently rubbing a little haze off a mint stae coin is usually OK and often effective.
Trying to rub off anything other than a light haze usually doesn't work.
Thanks,
David"
I am shocked by the answer. I thought rubbing even mint state coins would cause hairlines and therefore reduce the grades. Is there a better method to clean coins than to rub them?

Hi Tony,
It has been my experience that gently rubbing a mint state coin with a soft cloth will not harm the coin. i do not believe you can even tell that a coin had been gently rubbed.
But I'm talking about very gently rubbing off a little haze. Any firm rubbing may very well lead to hairlines.
Thanks,
David
