Question for NON-NORTH AMERICAN board members......

In coin shops in whatever country your in, do you see many US coins ??? When US coins are found in foreign shops, do they bring prices comparable to the US market, or do they bring substantially less or more ???? Tell us where you are, and tell us the story of US coins in your foreign (to us) shops.

I found a nice 1872 half dime at a flea market in Frankfurt/Main, Germany in 1982. I paid DM 1,- for it, about $0.50. It thought it looked real nice at the time. Later I graded it AU. Sent it to PCGS and they disagreed with my grade and gave it a MS-64 grade.

I don't see much here in Korea. When US stuff does appear it is usually in poor condition and quite common. Even so, the prices tend to be lower because there is little demand for it here.

I used to live in Italy. I found the selection and quality of U.S. coins in Italian coin shops low. And the prices high.
  • I think I saw a st.gaudens for about 450 euro in Germany. other than that i didn't really pay attention to us coins abroad.

Saw some overpriced raw U.S. gold at the coin counter in a department story in Germany.
  • I hate the department store coins in Germany, always overpriced, lacking in quality too. Only good for Euro supplies IF you're into Euros.

I agree with the over pricing. I travel all over the world and the US coins are much more exspensive overseas. However, I have noticed that the coins are very good in quality.

Having been stationed in Europe for years and making many trips back I can tell you Europe is loaded with counterfeit US coins. Anyone that buys raw gold coins there is nuts and needs their heads examined.
