Collecting Buddies

Hello all,

I went home for the weekend (from college) and I got to see some relatives and such and it got me thinking. Does anybody here have someone they collect with or that they talk coins with other than a local dealer or the forums? Maybe a Relative, significant other, or child?

Now that the question is out there, I would like to tell you who I collect with

My collecting buddy is my grandmother. I got her started on the state quarters and now she just can't get enough when it comes to coins. Her and my grandfather own a local shop in my hometown that carries party supplies, greeting cards and other decorations and misc. stuff. Now that my grandfather is semi-retired she spends most of her time at the register and with customers and this gives her the opportunity to handle quite a bit of money on a regular basis. I go down to the shop weekly when I am in town just to chat with her and share my latest coins and see what she has come up with. Now with college started back up for the semester, this past weekend is the first time ive gotten home since mid-january and boy was it nice to have a cup of coffee and talk with her. This has been going on for 3 or 4 years now and I can't even describe how much closer it has brought us. I used to only see her on major holidays and birthdays, now those are just a bonus. I learn something new everytime we hang out and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Its nice to be able to share the interest with somebody. My favorite part are birthdays and christmas now, because I have someone who knows what I am talking about FINALLY image and I get to buy coins for her too! The rest of my family seems to think its quite strange when my grandmother or I get so excited over a coin(they just can't see them as anything else other than pocket change). and they wonder why i'm laughing when they are getting winnie the Pooh figurines for gifts imageimageimage
While I was home she also harassed me about what I want for my upcoming birthday (21 on March 25tth), and she got the usual answer. "Just Suprise Meimage" She always finds something unique that I don't have. Not that it really matters anyways, I'll cherish whatever I recieve.

I have no collecting buddies, only vicious, cutthroat competitors.

  • That's a very nice story. I live rural and there's only one other person in my area that knows anything about coins. And the only thing he knows is what he bought 4 years ago from Coast to Coast.

This forum is my only group of collecting buddies. Actually, now that I think about it, no one on here is really my buddy. I don't know if most even recognize my name. Anyway, the forum as a whole is my only place to talk coins. Thats why I like it here so much.

I sometimes share my info with my mom but I don't think she really cares about coins to much. My little brother and sister are semi-interested but my little brother likes ancient coins and foreign while my little sister likes big dollars such as ikes. I can't help my little brother out too much seeing as how I only know about american coins but my little sister is there.

I talk and go to shows with an uncle and a friend of mine has some interest in coins. Though he gets board real quick cause "everything looks the same".

I found this board so I could ask questions and discuss things with people that know as much or more then I do, which is always helpful.

My 11 year old son is my main collecting buddy. He's building his own collection of state quarters and he really likes to look at all of my coins (even the modern crap image). We've also gone to 2 coin shows together, so far he's done a lot better than I have at the shows. Another person I talk coins with is a guy at work, every couple of weeks we go to a coin shop at lunch. I have all my coins I win on eBay shipped to my work so I always show him the latest and he'll do the same.

A friend I met online about two years ago - come to find out, we have similar career paths (both ex-Air Force), we both enjoy the same things, and we get along great. He has been here to visit three times, and I have been there to visit once. Unfortunately we live almost 800 miles apart, but we do talk about coins on the phone at least once a week. He's in the foreword to my book, and the best friend I've ever met.

Lucky to find someone with similar interests and career paths. 800 miles is a bit out of the way, but it looks like you have made it work out quite well.

I would kill for a collecting buddy. My wife, although we are almost perfect mates, hates my only two passions: coins and fishing.

I struck up a friendship with another clip collector after I noticed we were always bidding for the same coins on eBay. Luckily he lives in a neighboring state, so we've been able to meet up at some shows. If I make a major score, I'll write him about it even before I show my wife (in fairness, he never asks how much they cost image ).

  • I started collecting the state quarters cause my dad did, gave us something to do together. It's been a good hobby to share and I'm glad we have that. He has never gotten into grading or finer numismatic points and my interests have started braching out into those areas. Since he's the only one I know personally who has an interest in collecting I'm finding this forum a great place to expand my interest.

Now, if I can only get him to let me go through all those rolls of mercs he has squirrelled away image

Hehe, keep harping on those merc rolls and u may get to see them yet.

My grandparents have quite a stash too, they tease me with parts of it once in a while. They actually pulled out a plastic ice cream bucket full of misc. silver, silver certificates, and some red seals. I got to pick out a few coins as a christmas gift, but from what my dad tells me there is much more that they aren't showing me. I hope to see it eventually.
