1893 Half Dollar - Worlds Fair +

A friend shared with me a coin I have never heard of before - an 1893 Half Dollar - Worlds Fair Columbian Exposition, Chicago.
I did a completed listings search on eBay hoping to find some information on it and see what it might be going for, and found only two listings. One auction had ended early, and the other closed with only one bid.
Can someone share some information with me regarding this coin? Since it has a denomination on it, it's a "legal tender" coin, right? I would think they are a very rare coin, but obviously I have no idea. Basically the sole listing I found on eBay leads me to believe they're not changing hands that much, and maybe are not that well known or sought after.
Also, this same friend had some paper money from the 1800's in denominations under $1, like 50 cents, 25 cents, etc. What's that all about? Is this desireable, rare stuff, or just funny money?
