What exactly . . .

. . . does Paypal mean when it refers to a "confirmed address," and is it something I should be concerned with when sending items to a Paypal payer?

  • I believe a "confirmed address" means you, as the seller, have some sort of recourse with Paypal in case the buyer tries to stiff you or something, whereas sending an item to an unconfirmed address means you're on your own. But then again, I may be totally wrong. I've never had any incidents selling to either confirmed or unconfirmed addy's.

OK, thanks. I've seen some sellers on ebay saying that they won't sell by Paypal without a confirmed address, so I guess they've been burned a few times.

  • As a matter of routine, I state that I will only accept Paypal from CONFIRMED addresses, in my auction. I do this in hopes that it will discourage prospective scammers, but I usually accept it from unconfirmed as well, as long as they have a good feedback as a buyer. Maybe it works, or maybe I've just been lucky so far.

What about when they say that the payer is unverified?

  • That I don't know. I've always either seen confirmed or unconfirmed, at least from buyers in the U.S. The few times I've sold to locations outside the U.S. it was to buyers in Europe who were unconfirmed, but verified. They explained to me that their country cannot get "confirmed" status, but that "verified" meant the same thing. I don't know what it (unverified) means for Paypal users within the U.S. though.

  • A confirmed address is the address that is on the credit card that a person uses to pay with. I live at a different address than the one that is on my debit card that I use through paypal. When I pay for an auction the seller will get an email stating that he is shipping his package to an unconfirmed address. I all has to do with where the package is being shiped to.
