Should I remove Ikes from original packaging?

Hi,

This is my first post! I have been reading the post for a while and have learned tons of stuff! I have some Proof Clad Ike's from 71-73 that are starting to show a bit of a milky haze. They look fine when viewed at a slight angle, but straight on the haze is very visible. The packaging is original, the hard plastic holders contained in the nice woodgrain vinyl boxes (the 70's must have been happy times for a woodgrain vinyl salesman!). Is the packaging causing/contributing to the hazing? Should I take them out of the packaging and place them in something else? I read some of the threads about dipping in acetone to remove the haze but not sure I want to go that route 'cause I have never done it before and don't want to break anything. Thanks in advance for your insight!

    Welcome aboard.

Most of the '72 and later proof ikes have hazing or corrosion problems and it is
especially acute on the '74. It's unlikely that acetone will remove it. Mint pack-
aging isn't always good and stabilization in acetone is a good idea before any ef-
fects are seen. There are some things that will work on the hazing.

  • The Brown Box Ikes seem to haze very easily. I am surprised NGC grades them in the holders, given they are so suspectible to the haze.

image and NGC only gives an opinion when in original boxes no NGC guarantee!
