Congress is trying to fast track a bill which would authorize the minting of unlimited quantities of Mercury dimes, Standing Liberty quarters, and Barber half dollars for release in the second, third and fourth quarters of this year. To accomodate collectors, the new coins will also be available in bags of 1,000,000. Based on the mint's projected profits from first day orders of the new Jefferson Buffalo nickel, Congress believes that these four new coins will generate sufficient revenue to save Social Security.
