NGC Variety attribution charges?

I sent in 5 coins and put the varieties down in the open space, but did not check the box to have the varieties attributed. They charged me the $7- each to have them attributed. I called to question the charge and they said that they charge the 7- each because they have to verify the varieties. I do not recall being charged for this on past submissions when I listed the variety on the submission form. Anyone else run into this?

Never sent Morgans to NGC myself, but I've heard they do charge a fee for variety attribution if it is requested.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • I also had this happen. Just recently they began using a slightly different online submission format. Before when I had, for example, a small date 1960 cent, I would indicate the variety on the form with no verification charge. Now if you put in the small date as a variety, it automatically checks the verification box and adds the $7.00 to your charge. When I called them about it, they told me not to indicate varieties that are listed in their data base as common accepted varieties (such as small date cents...type 1 or type 2 Ikes...zinc or copper 1982 cents). They would attribute them automatically without being requested. You should only ask for verification for varieties not listed on their pop report (such as double dies...other than those listed). For example a 1972 cent with a type 2 or type 3 double die would require variety verification but a type 1 would not, as it is listed in the pop report as a common variety. I hope that answers your question.

  • Yes,
$7 bucks it is.....I have done the variety on a few coins and depending on how rare the variety is depends on if you want to spend the $7 bucks to have it attributed.
