Same Color, but one is NT and the other AT.

REAL COLOR

Not So REAL COLOR

Same color. image

Now, trivia time: What is it about the Franklin that 'tells' you it is authentic toning and what is it about the Peace dollar (other than the Seller!) that 'tells' you it isn't?

  • First - the total difference between the obverse/reverse toning patterns on the NT coin vs the similarity on the AT coin (anybody who has studied nature knows that natural patterns NEVER match).

Second - the way that the colors are mixed. On the NT coin, the colors appear in distinct bands, while on the AT coin, they seem to be sprayed all over the coin.

Third - for a 90% silver coin to tone as much as the AT coin, I would expect the darker bands as are evidenced in the NT coin

Fourth - uniformity of color - the NT coin has several distinct shades within the bands of color, while the AT coin has the same color spread all over the coin.

Fifth - (for the obvious answer) the seller of the AT coin.

  • I agree with all points made above and I add that the toning exhibited on the Frankie is easily distinguished as mint set toning....very attractive toning I might add. The toning on the Peace dollar doesn't fit the coins I have seen........that doesn't mean it's AT...but I have seen quite a few toned Peace dollars and that toning pattern is certainly not the norm.

In addition....when looking throught the inventory.....and from the coin I purchased from him......the toning is nearly identical on all..........if it's NT...he should play the lotto image

If the holders and the Sellers were reversed, would your opinion differ?

  • Mine wouldn't. I look at the coins first, then the holder, then the seller.

If the Peace dollar was in PCGS plastic I'd likely say it was legit image. Otherwise, that green is just too weird.

    Hot Frankie though.

<< <i>On the NT coin, the colors appear in distinct bands... >>

Actually, sometimes if the bands of color are too distinct/abrupt, it can be a sign that the color is NOT natural. Naturally toned coins often display bands of color which gradually blend into each other, rather than sharp/abrupt distinctions in shades/hues.

The toning doesn't flow right, it's splochy and sits on the surface of the coin wrong. I recognized his work before I saw who the seller was-----
