While I was tracking prices between January and October 2004, not one Cleon Jones in 8 came up for sale. I don't have access to the population reports to determine percentage of 8s to submissions but, from the registery sets I can determine that Cleon has a pop of 17 in eight with 2 higher. That's not too different than the Shannon at 14 eights, 2 higher and tougher than Hershberger and Radatz both of which have 19 eights and either 4 or 5 higher. The top two bidders seem to bid pretty strongly for what they want and that's all it takes to push a final price up.
Now with all of that said, even though the centering is less than perfect, the clarity of the card is amazing. The Jones card usually appears faded but this one has deep, rich colors. If it turns out that the colors were enhanced by the scanning software, I imagine that the buyer will be sorely disappointed.
In checking the top 25 sets on the registry, I only found 5 eights, sets 1, 2,3, 4 & 10 and 3 sevens, sets 5, 8 & 11. Dude's set (#6) is not currently available for viewing so I don't know his status on the card although he did not bid on that auction. I also checked Dave Read's retired set and although he was at 95% completion, the Jones was one of the cards he was missing.
Dave, If I remember a 9 sold on Ebay for over $1500 awhile back. The card is a notorious card for OC and quite a few of the 8's I have seen are gifts. They should be 7's.Now when I say I've seen we are talking about 4 or 5 of them. I personally sold 2-8's for nothing near $400. I think you got 1 from me Dave for in the $75 range. The eye appeal just isnt there. BUT we must remember that they are 1969 Mets cards, and in great demand here in the NY-NJ area. I suspect if 2 Met collectors really needed it it would of gone for much more. In my opinion the card is worth $150.
Gas'es final point is an important one. 69' Mets are always in demand. I still have my complete graded team set and it would take a pretty penny to dislodge it from me. There are probably just as many Met collectors (or more) seeking these high grade 69's for their sets as there are pure 69' set builders. Many cards in that team set are considered tough. Try Kranepool, Weis, Shamsky or Collins in 8 or better to name a few. RayBShotz
Very interesting auction. I had a newer '69 PSA 8 collector asking me about low pop commons and I pointed out this auction as one to keep an eye on as an example. I had no idea it would end over $200. I thought it would be more in the $150 range(especially with the centering). Also, it seems a lot of the low pop commons have been weak as of late. It'll be interesting to see what this one goes for:
Thanks for the info on this card. I felt the 400+ range was way too high. I agree Bob that 150 would not be unreasonable for this card. It is a low pop and there are alot of Mets fans. I did get one from you at the 75 level and later sold it for about the same. I still need one for my new set and will wait it out.
damn..and I didn't get - as one of the few self professed Cleon fans, ready for an all cleon jones set registry...except I don't have the 1969 and my ebay search function must have failed me or I'd have another to add to (with indication of what I paid for some of them):

Hang in there they go down most of the time. The pop will rise and the price will drop especially in 8.

The pop on the Jones is:
2 in nine
17 in eight
9 in seven
