Wild color on that baldie. I bet it is even better when you cut it of the plastic. Was there a break in the plastic Russ or does it look like it toned that way while still sealed? I bet the quarter and dime are sweet also.
Russ, are you saying air caused the beautiful toning on that proof ? I don't know about the older Proof sets, but the mint sets that I've seen have two pieces of cardboard in each set. Would this cause that type of toning if exposed inside the envelope ?
Hell if I know what caused the toning. I do know, though, that toned coins in celo pack proof sets frequently come with the center seams seperated. Thus, there appears to be some kind of causal relationship between deterioration of the packaging and color on the coins. It might be exposure to chemicals from the inserts. That is one theory.
Nice ... I just bought a bulk lot of 61-64 proof sets, mostly with the halves cut out, but did get a 1961 Frankie with mottled cranberry toning, a bit like that!
It might have something to do with the glue when the seems separate, I just got a 63 proof set and the seems are split at the half/quarter, both of them turned bright orange.
Edit: awsome Frankie Russ. Did you buy it knowing it was toned or just happen to come across it in an unopened set? .

Russ - how does the nickle look in that set? My '62 came out with dark toning on the half, quarter and penny but the nickle (see other thread) came out an awesome purple!
This is a very dumb ass thread. - Laura Sperber - Tuesday January 09, 2007 11:16 AM

Can't, and it's not a baggie.

The usual seperation in the center seams. Quarter is also toned, but not as cool. Dime didn't get much color.

No, it's covered in all that tarnish.
