That's gotta hurt. Makes me hope I get outbid on a current Heritage auction I was hoping to win.

There was some speculation as to whether these coins were insured. Some were of the opinion that Fed EX offered no insurance on coins. I was of the belief that Heritage would have had its own insurance independent of Fed Ex to cover a loss in transit. Would welcome an answer. Thanks.
  • Was wondering about the insurance aspect myself. Would you ship 178K worth of stuff by common carrier? I sure wouldn't. There are quite a few private couriers so why not use one of them?

FedEx will not cover rare coins. If Heritage doesn't carry private dealer's insurance, they're going to be eating the $175k.
  • has Heritage always shipped coin via FedEx?
I always recieve currency from them via USPS image

Heritage uses FEDEX for higher dollar stuff. Last January I was high bidder on a 94 Morgan which was about a $3K coin. It came by FEDEX. I assume that Heritage has an arrangement with FEDEX or is self insured or has smoe other form of coverage.

I couldn't fathom Heritage being stupid enough to not have insurance... even I have it, and I rarely ship packages worth over $1k (which go Registered, anyway).

This helps put a $50 refund that I am waiting on from USPS(for about 2 months now) into perspective.

I hope they NAIL the bastiges that hooked those coins!

I'm sure Heritage has private insurance on this. It is a big pain, losing a consignors coin, and the lost profits for the coins. They would much rather have the coins than the settlement. Also, it takes a few months to get reimbursed.

Where could these coins possibly be disposed of without getting the thieves caught? Unless they are broken out of their holders (which would greatly reduce their selling value) they are going to be "hot" for a long, long time.

It is just a matter of time.
