An 83CC $ with a little rainbow

lsicalsica Posts: 1,584 ✭✭✭✭
I've got this piece in my oh-so-modest collection (NGC MS-61), and was wondering if the bit of rainbow toning on the reverse makes it any more "desirable" than just the regular "blue sheet price", and about how much....

Thanks to all for their help

  • I do not understand why it has such a low grade? anyone else think it should be re-graded?

Forget about bluesheet on this one. With the nice toning on the reverse, I would estimate this coin at about $200.

Nope. It has very heavy marks on the lower cheek, and also in the field below the chin, both prime focal areas.

I bet the coin looks much better in hand than the scan shows.

The marks are a bit more than the scan shows, so MS61 is a fair grade. But the coloring is much better than the scan shows. Rusts to blues to gold on the reverse, golds on the opposite side on the lettering into blues on the rim.

I took it to a local show recently, and dealers there were offering between $100 and $150. Most didn't even bother to look at the reverse, and those that did said things like "my customers like white coins"

Of course. And if you had shown them a white coin, the respond probably might have been, "my customers are looking for toned coins."image

Here's a pic that's less "washed out" and better shows the coins colors

lsica: Yes the multi-colored toning on about 1/3 of the reverse of your 1883-CC would make some people more interested in the coin than if it were blast white.

It probably would not add a very significant commercial amount to the value of the coin, but it would be an eye-catcher that may get someone's attention and perhaps encourage them to purchase the coin.
