Off to Long Beach

My friend twisted my arm to go to Long Beach with him today. So i stopped by the bank and loaded up on money. But i have no idea what i plan to buy. the two coins i still need are too expensive. Other than that -- who knows? If I spend money on something i dont need, it only delays the purchase of the two i need. this is a conundrum. Any body else ever feel this way? Checkers

tell us your experiences at long beach and if you got any coins

  • I bought one of the coins I needed. it's a Lafayette in 63. When I showed it to another dealer he said "Hey, my friend (a dealer) has a Lafayette -- you should compare yours to his." So I went over and showed my coin to the other guy. His was in a 60 holder. He's all "Look -- my coin has way more eye appeal than yours!!!" This made me feel bad. I admit his coin looked nice. But I am still happy with mine.

It didn't take me too long to find and buy the Lafayette. We arrived shortly after 10 AM. I bought the coin around 10:15. I was ready to head home by noon. But my friend putz'd around till 1:30. I ended up buying one of the sauerkraut hot dogs. That cost me almost as much as another coin. But it hit the spot.

I picked up a pearl necklace for my wife. She didn't like it so much she didn't even take it out of the little plastic bag. Anybody need a pearl necklace?

I was standing nearby and just happened to overhear that conversation. Don't feel bad about your coin - that MS60 was in an old holder and would probably regrade to 62 today. And it had gem eye appeal with a multitude of small hits and lines.
  • I bought my Lafayette MS63 PCGS almost 20 years ago from Jeff Garett, Mid American for $2,000. The next week the grey sheet said $1,000.

How close am I to getting my money back!!!

Decent PCGS 63s retail in the $1800 +/- range. Wholesale would be $1550-$1700 area. I'd pay $1700 for a good looking Lafayette PCGS in MS-63 holder. So, to answer your question, you're close.

Don't blame Jeff Garrett (I don't think you area) for the $2000 price you paid. The coin market was in the stratosphere just before the plummet, and it looks like you bought near the top.
