question on silver proof sets

Hi All,
1) Do people in this group think the 2004 silver proof set will increase in price like the 1999 set?

2) Can anyone tell me for sure if the 2005 set will have both new versions of the nickel?

3) I the 2005 set does have both nickels will it also skyrocket by 2008 when the statehood quarters are finished?

Thanks for all replys
Paul

First of all I am anything but a modern expert and hopefully one of them will reply but---

    1) No, I don't think so, you can still buy them from the mint. The clad set on the other hand already has gone up in price.

    2) Yes, just like the 2004 set.

    3) Your guess is as good as mine, because at this point in time that's all it would be. image

  • IMHO, once the Silver Sets sell out at the mint they will also experience an increase in price. I wouldnt be surprised if they double within 12-18 months of selling out, perhaps higher. I suspect their mintages are as low as the 1999 Silver Sets and the 2001 Silver Sets. It may take a while, but I think all the 10 & 11 Coin proof sets will continue to go up over time.
  • Do you check out the Mint's web site? Good way to keep up. Another guess is that with all the new collectors in the market you probably won't go wrong at the Mint's prices, and I think Will is right, so get 'em while they are available.

I would say nab one from the mint cause never going to get it cheaper.

I would think hard to say that it will go into the 99 price range but an increase is very likely.

    Probably Not

  • Millions of proof sets will be sold. It could be that at some point in the future there will be more sellers than buyers of these sets. Frankly I'm surprised the 1999 sets are still so expensive.

It is nice to have a run of proof sets. If you buy one or two sets a year from the Mint you will have them all. Some years may be worth more or less over time. Regardless of value these are neat collections.

Now if you are looking for investment advice I'd say DorkGirl and your guess is as good as mine. As for me I'm not even going to venture a guess. image

1999 is great. Do you know why the 2000 silver proofs regularly sell below the mint issue price?

  • I certainly don't think the 2004 Silver Sets will ever be cheaper than they are now. If you can afford to put them away, in the end you'll come out ahead. Perhaps they won't move like '99 or 01' but if the mintages of '04 are as low as people have speculated, they will certainly go up some. But who knows really.
