1989 Upper Deck Baseball-thoughts

Was just curious what everyone thought would be the best way to get ahold of some quality cards to submit from this set?

Could buy a factory sealed set for $75, or a low number box for $90. The box there's no guarantee of a Griffey, but the possibility exists of more than one. The factory set, especially with Jr. being card #1, has the possibility of damage to that front card.

I plan on submitting the Jr., Sheffield, and Unit, in hopes of a minimum of 9, praying for 10s.

Thoughts?

go with the lo # wax/foil. with factory sets you are sure to get the cards but the griffey is notorious for the blue ink fading from the box and also dinged corners being card #1 in the set (the sheffield and unit should be good).

odds are better for a griffey in the lo# foil boxe (1:700 vs 1:800). in addition, the hi# boxes will average 1-3 cards that are in the 701-800 series.

    Thanks,

Be careful on who you buy a box from. '89 Upper Deck followed sequences from pack to pack, so that someone opening one pack and knowing the sequences could tell exactly which packs any of the top rookies would be found in.

Did Upper Deck seal the boxes??? I forgot!!!
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

That year - I recollect no - some dealers shrink wrap them so they are protected while in storage.
I promise, if you buy them from BBCKid, BBCExchange e.g. - the boxes will be clean.

And I agree, factory sets were considered "investment" items not to be opened. Plus, since the prices have come back down to earth, it's a fun way to spend some time with a couple of boxes!

Once again, I'm going to stick my neck out: if Griffey stays healthy and starts whacking them out - people will focus on how clean he is and jump on his RC - I remember when a 9 would set you back like 250 bucks!
I bought 2 of each of the 5 RCs last winter for 180 bucks! That's 10 RCs in 9 with two being the 89UD.
