Long Beach review for Friday 2/25/05

Ok, I ditched my Friday meetings and headed up from San Diego to Long Beach. Spent five hours on the floor looking at every Lincoln in the building.

I had to laugh on my drive up to Long Beach as I terrorized the 5 and 405 in my rented red corolla. It is usually me griping at the crazy California drivers and then I realized I had California plates on my rental!!! So drove faster and weaved through traffic more!!!

Anyway, the traffic on the bourse floor was slow to average. I saw a lot of people trying to sell coins to dealers. There was some nice quality Lincolns available. Given my limited time, I didn't browse other series. Someone has just sold Dave MS68 a very nice set of Lincolns, and I really hadn't expected to buy as many as I did! Thanks Dave!! Sometimes lady luck smiles, and I can pick up 20 or so top quality Lincolns (come on Dave sell me that 53-d cheap!!)

Bought some nice Lincolns from Keith Dallman at Washington Rare Coins, a killer 32p from Dave Weygant, and several others on the floor.

Got a nice surprise when I saw Bobzaps! He looks great and is frustrated that his not back 100% yet. He has some trouble getting the words out (but he still can say the "F" word!) We had lunch together along with Mike Rakosky, another class act.

I also happened up on a neat box of Lincolns at Jim Sprankle's table. He had a box of about 1,000 MS65 red wheats in cardboard 2x2's that were 3 for $1. I had a lot of fun digging through the box and spending about 40 bucks!

I saw Stewart as I was leaving, who drug me back in to view the Merchon Lincolns that will be up for auction later this summer. I didn't realize they were there for viewing. There are some really nice coins in that collection and I can't wait for the auction!

I had a lot of fun today, and more than I would have had back in San Diego, that's for sure.

Craig, Bob outwalked me and Mike to the food! He just wishes his rehabilitation was going faster. He spoke of you often and appreciates your friendship!

  • Excellent report of the Long Beach show, Doug. I saw Bob Zap and he DOES look great! He is frustrated about the slow progress as he recovers from the stroke, but he was fortunate that he was in the hospital when it occured! (Not that anyone is fortunate to have a stroke) But the administration of anti-clotting agents etc within mere minutes of the event probabably saved his life!

I bought the nicest PCGS MS-68 1943-P steelie from Bob I've ever seen. As many of you know, I specialize in Lincoln cents and the 1943-P is notorious for a mediocre "look" in MS-68 compared to the S and D mints. This coin looked nicer than any S or D mint steelie I've ever seen. It found a home with a phone call in minutes.

It was indeed at treat to see Tom Mershon's wonderful display of his #2 Lincoln w/Varieties Registry set at table 400 (Heritage). I was quite impressed with the MS-64RB 1922 No D strong reverse which I believe is the same coin that had formerly resided in an NGC 65 Rd holder a few years back that Bob Hughes had for sale.

I bought quite a few real nice tough dates from MS68 which he partnered with Andy in purchasing the Mike's collection. Those two are a class act! Mike was at the show as well and he bought some killer key date SLQs with some of the $$. Mike's a real nice guy and selling his set must have been a bittersweet experience for him, much as it was for Keith Dallman about two months ago. I was fortunate to buy some real nice Lincolns from Keith at FUN and here in Long Beach including a real flashy MS-66 1909-S VDB that I sold Keith a few years back. Always glad to have an old friend back!

Just average attendance by the public, but lots of dealer to dealer trading going on. I bought, in addition to the Lincoln cents, a couple of Gobrecht $$ as well as a rare 1871-CC seated Dol in NGC AU55.

Still have a lot of $$ left over to let me work the Baltimore show in less than 2 weeks.

Overall, I chracterize the show as good and the coin market is still red hot in most areas. Nice material is bringing runaway prices at the auctions, as it has in the past couple of years.

Ira, you have couple of coins that I will be chasing in the near future!

Keith was slobbering after he saw the coins of Mike's that Dave had. I grabbed 19 of them before I let anyone else know. Keith and John were scrambling to get over there and sort through what was left! I stroked a sweet 31-s from those guys in PCGS 6 red. They have a LOAD of 31-s in top quality if anyone needs one. They had another in 6 red that was very close to the one I picked off. Who knows, I could have picked the wrong one. Keith is first class and knows which coins are PQ. I think they were swooning when I looked at about a hundred of there Lincolns and picked off two of them.(LOL!) They were pushing quality over price, and they were right in most cases. Too bad I didn't need those dates.

Amen brother. I actually enjoyed filling in the words that wouldn't come to his lips! (That is a rarity in dealing with the old Bob!) Bob needs to step back and realize what he has be through. I pushed some ST and PT on him (since that is my business) and he said "F You" he would do it on his own!!!! This I don't doubt!

Ira, PM me with Lincolns you need to dump!

  • Doug,

I've placed quite a few to folks on my want list,

but others I bought for inventory an exceptional 1914-S in 64Rd, a dynamite 13-S red in 64 that should have been a 65, a 1912-D in 65 Rd, a great 21-S and a very tough 25-S both in 64Rd, an unbelieveable 28D in 64Rd..should be a 65 an looks like a high end 65, 29-S and 29-D in 65 Rd, a 27-D in 64 Rd, an outstanding 17-D in 64 Rd, and some leseer ones. Not all were from the Takada collection, but most were. I'm still looking for a 24-D in red for two customers.
