I have no personal experience in this area, just perception.

I would have a tough time choosing between ANR and Heritage as an auctioneer. If I went the auction route, to some extent, it would depend on the deal that I was able to strike. I have a feeling I would get a better package from Heritage, but this is only intuition (and what was described in the Legacy package they sent me). Unless my collection were a feature collection at Heritage, which is extraordinarily unlikely, I think that the individual lots get better attention/photography/wrtie-ups in ANR. I have had positive interactions with parties from both houses, but recently, I have had experience with Heritage that makes me feel that they are too big, and I am too small.

That said, I might be better off selling (or consigning) most of my coins to specialists from whom I purchased them.

Fortunately, I do not anticipate selling the coins anytime soon, and I expect the landscape to be quite different when it is time to break up the Three Rivers Collection.

  • This subject is one thats been more on my mind lately because its a real possibility I will have to sell my collection later this year.

I still haven't made up my mind how to go yet if I have to. Heritage gets the most exposure, but they seem to only give the best pictures to certain people or certain coins. If a coin is worth 4 figures, it is worth a decent picture.

I wonder how Mr. Ronan feels about that ?

  • I would vote for me on eBay if I could.... That is actually what I did choose to do with my collection.

If you were going to sell a coin worth $5,000-$10,000, would you use eBay or an auction house?

Well I have about 6 coins out of 100 worth using Heritage or other major auction service for. I think I mite opt for an auction in a place like Kansas City or Chicago where there are more likely buyers with money than selling thru a local auction service. Lets face it, a 81-o in pcgs 64 aint gonna bring great money no matter where you sell it.

Given the quality of my collection, probably Heritage.

I'd probably go with ANR... Their catalogs are incredibly classy, and every coin that needs a picture gets an excellent one (coins that don't need them are, for example, an SMS Lincoln... and even that got one, I think). Plus, I happen to really like the staff that they've got. John Kraljevich and Frank Van Valen are at the Summer Seminar (John taught my class the first year I was there), and they're each a wealth of knowledge, and so passionate about what they do. What can I say? They made a damn good first impression.

    ANR

my first choice would be private treaty for some and the rest consignment with a trusted dealer that specializes in the type of coins i have

Most of my collection is raw. The most expensive 30 coins make up 30% of the entire collection's value. Since I wouldn't want to wait several months or spend 3% of the collection's value putting these is PCGS slabs, most of the choices offered above are irrelevant. Ebay or specialized dealers would be my choice.

I don't see a selection for "none of the above".
  • I met the ladies from ANR yesterday, now granted I was with Mark Feld (not sure if that helped or hurt me) at the time, but they couldn't have been nicer. They also made me feel like I was doing them a favor by asking them to see some coins. And they couldn't have been prettier.

When was the last time someone in this hobby went out of their way to provide customer service???

ANR gets my vote and my business!!!

I will probably go with ANR, although I never had experience with them, but based on what I have heard from others here. I had used Heritage in the past, but recent experience with them is making me think twice.
  • None of the above...

I'd sell it all myself on EBay... or, if I didn't have the time/drive to sell myself, I would consign to a forum member...

I consigned about $250k to Heritage in 2004 and was happy with the results. If the group had been more in line with the classics, I would have gone with big Dave at ANR. He's still my favorite classics guy and always will be no matter what mantra he is operating under.

Bill, if I thought my consignments fit their type of wares, I would be all over it. John will be a serious contenter in the future, notwithstanding the fact that he is a personal friend (he loves quarters!)

You need to define this more carefully. Who will do best will depend on the type/value of the material you are selling as well as the location of the auction. If you are a major consignor you will get excellent service. If you are a minor consignor the service you receive may be indifferent.

I opted for ANR. Heritage does a great job too but their sales are just so enormous they don't seem to have time to spend on quality imaging and cataloging. Plus the people at ANR treat everyone like they're a V.I.P.
  • etexmikeetexmike Posts: 6,852 ✭✭✭
It was a tie between Heritage and ANR.

I voted Heritage just to see the results.

I think they are the top 2, at least to me.

  • ANR!!!! A real class operation with smaller and very nicely presented auctions. Unless you have major rarities, it's very easy to get lost in the crowd in a large Heritage auction.
  • saintgurusaintguru Posts: 7,727 ✭✭✭
I think that ANR made a HUGE splash with the Oliver Jung sale...certainly one of the premier auction is a long time...however I also thought that their last auction was not particularly high end coins...some real "sliders".

That said, I am not at all surprised by the results!! THANKS!!

No offense but, I think they've made a bigger splash than the Jung collection. A couple names come to mind...Eliasberg and Bass for example. Same folks doing the same job, just a different name.

All of the companies mentioned offer high class, professional presentations.

    There is no correct answer.

As a professional numismatist, I offer consultation services to many sellers and can tell you from my experience that each of the houses has the ability to achieve excellent results.

The bottom line is the contract and what you are able to accomplish, as to timing and your own specific needs and desires.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

Interestingly, the two firms that received the vast majority of the votes are the firms that participate (to some degree) on these forums.

I would probably use a specialist dealer. Of the choices offered, however, I would use Stack's--about the only major which wouldn't virtually require that I submit my babies for certification prior to sale.

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
  • I would have said Heritage up to 6 months ago. Now I feel my coins would be buried with others and I know their photos do not inspire confidence. Now I'd go with ANR so long as the fees are roughly the same.

  • Coins under $500 would go to ebay. Jon Rosenthal, NHRC, would get first shot at the rest. He be good to me, I be good to him. I don't want to consider the other possibilities. It makes my head hurt.

My first inclination was to say ANR until I remembered their recent sale of choice AU Barber halves. They grouped two or three coins into one lot and they don't image multiple coin lots ! Other than that, they are a class act and I have consigned with them thru one of my favorite dealers for an advantageous deal.

My experience with Heritage has been mediocre however when using an intermediary, I was able to secure a decent deal.

Direct submissions to any of the larger auction houses, by the average collector, arn't treated the same way the larger dealers' submissions are treated.

It only goes to show that larger consigners get the better deals. It only makes sense.

Well it's been a year and a half, has anything changed?
  • RYKRYK Posts: 35,800 ✭✭✭✭✭
Wow! ANR and Heritage are deadlocked. I probably said ANR earlier. With the change at ANR and some improvements at Heritage, I could see using either at this point, with the slight nod to Heritage until there is clarity on the future of ANR.

  • I think when it is time to unload the major stuff that I have collected- it will go to Heritage and hopefully at a major show- as stated in another thread- where the big money will talk.

And who knows- maybe an 81-O in a 64 will bring moon money one day- just not today.
