How would you grade this Barber Dime?

I went back to the new shop today to make sure I didn't miss anything. Came across this dime pretty cheap so I bought it. It does have a few hits. How would you grade and/or price it? Obviously, I'm not very experienced in this series.

Purple, here's the 1897 Barber Half:

  • Regarding the Dime:

VG-8 VG10 bit it has some damage as you pointed out.

I would pay about 3.00 - 4.00 bucks for this one.

    It's nice and original!
  • That half is nice and original also! G-4

Nice to see some circulated stuff out of ya Eric......Nice Pick ups!

I got the half out of his junk Barber half box. It stood out from all the cleaned slicks.

Well as long as we have a shop here in town I'll be going there once in a while to find nice circulated Bust, Seated and Barber material. I don't like buying this stuff online, it's nearly impossible to pick out the cleaned and retoned coins unless you inspect them in person.

I'd call the dime VF before damage... looks darn nice!

"LIBERTY" is all there. The nicks and scrapes are relatively minor. The color is good, looks original. Retail is $3-$4.

Hey stman, dark coin = dark picture. I'm not going to brighten it, what you see in the picture is how it looks in hand.

Hey, perhaps you could lighten the coin, then the picture would come out lighter?

A VF barber dime should have sharp, distinct "LIBERTY" AND, for the 'P', 'S', and 'D' mint coins, the corn kernels should be well defined.

"LIBERTY" is arguably "distinct" on K6AZ's coin but in my opinion this coin can't be called VF because of the nicks and scrapes and the corn kernels not being well defined.

I don't think ANACS would net grade this coin. I think they would call it F12.

The dime is an average to low-end F12. I would've been tempted to say VG10 but the LIBERTY is indeed all there. It's a Fine with hits. Definitely a "problem" coin, but not unattractive despite the mishandling it got in the past. It looks like a nice grab if it was cheap.

The half is G6, in my opinion. A strong Good but not quite VG. Except for the cut on the neck it looks like a decent, original coin. I would "shine it up" a little with a paper towel or soft cloth. (No, really- I mean it. You could remove some of the loose dirt from the cheek without messing up its color, and stop rubbing it before it got too shiny. Clean it without "cleaning" it, if you knowhutimean.)

LMV, I was thinking of you when I was in there. He had quite a selection of holed seated material.

I'd call the 1897 Half G-6 and the 1905-S dime VF details with distractions. The dime is a slightly better date, which makes it, surprisingly, in demand at the moment. It should sell for $6 on eBay but could very well bring $10 to $15 depending on how much the auction description stretches the truth. Professional quality photos would hurt this coin's value on eBay compared to other auctions for similar coins posted by non-disclosers.

Ebay also says that Barber Halves are the hottest series of U.S. coins out there at the moment. Your coin should fetch $10 -$12 there or less if you describe the coin in detail and honestly, from the perspective of a discriminating buyer -- most of whom would not look at an auction with a grade less than Fine mentioned in the title for a common date Barber Half.

VF-20 in my book. Too bad it's slightly damaged.

    Still, not a bad dime.

The 1905-S Dime looks like a beat down VF20 as the technical grade, but the market grade might be in a VG to Fine range. The half a G6.

If the coin had no problems, It should grade a F-15 at PCGS. However, PCGS is not fond of exceptionally dark barbers and therefore might would F-12 it. But this coin has extensive damage and would get BB IMO

The dime: VF-20, net F-12 (nicks).
    The half: G-6
    All glory is fleeting.
  • Hmmm...

Seems to be a lot of net grading going on here.

The '05-S dime is technically VF30. I would post it as "1905-S VF+ nicks"

I am surprised that would be considered a Bold Liberty on that dime.

Purple: I call your 1913 dime VF-25. Too bad there's no S under the wreath.
