My First Half dimes

My brother sent these two H10C coins to me for my type set with a note that they were just place holders until I could find suitable upgrades. The 1833 is an AU55 and the 1854 is an AU58. Both are in PCGS slabs. This is the first time I have seen this type of coin -- they are really small!

I thought I would share scans of them with the forum to see what the rest of you think. Do any of you collect these tiny things as a series?

  • Very nice! Not a bad start at all. Is that a die clash I see on the 1854?

Those are really nice. I just got back into searching for nice circulated Bust and Seated material. Picked this one up at a local shop Wednesday:

I like half dimes for the scarcity. Nothing wrong with little tiny coins- many have rarity that more than makes up for their size.
  • Nice "place holders"image

I specially like the die crack going through the date on the 33.

Got my first HD about a month ago and I too was surprised at their size.

Nice coins Sn3nut. Especially the capped bust one, all it needs is a bit more "gunk" and it'd be perfect image

both are superlstive coins and also great type coins to boot with greswt history behind them

these neglected little half sisters of the dimes are great value opportunity coinsimage

it should be made law that every american needs to own at least one half dime

most that where minted where turned into love tokens and/or holed and many where shipped off to other counrties like candad where they where more used and other places like south america where many of the half dimes where holed and they where accepted at 2.5 cents for value

they are small but still they can be seen and if in an ngc or pcgs holders for example are well presented

For somebody who'd never seen half dimes before, you managed to get some pretty daggum respectable-lookin' pieces for your first examples! image

This one'll likely go off in my next submission, whenever that is. It has some pretty nice colorful toning that came out greyish-looking in this picture.

I won this one some time ago in one of Airplanenut's charity auctions. It is in an ANACS AU50 holder.

This one ain't as purdy but it didn't cost me anything, except for a minute or two of kneeling down in the grass to dig.

  • Half dimes and trimes (three cent pieces) can be really addicting to collect, and very attractive.
