Well...if you submit enough SMS Lincolns....eventually you get lucky :) HUGE Upgrade

I got the results over the phone from Teletrade on a submission I sent in back in January. I'll post the rest of the results when they send me the official email but I did get a couple of hits on some 1965 SMS lincolns including a couple of surprising crack-outs:

Date Denomination Variety Grade
1965 1C SMS 66RD About what I figured....just setting up the last 2 coins
1965 1C SMS 65RD Thought 66 but ditto on the previous comment
1965 1C SMS 66RD Ditto
1965 1C SMS 66RD Ditto
1965 1C SMS 67RD I'll take it
1965 1C SMS 65CAM Cracked this out of a ANACS-65 (no CAM) holder......
1965 1C SMS 66CAM Cracked THIS baby out of a PCGS 65 (no CAM) holder....Pop 4 Coin

If you bought it in December, I could only find two 1965 PCGS SMS 65RD cents on Teletrade. Neither of them looked like cameos to me, and both sold very cheap. You've got one hell of an eye if you could tell one was a 66CAM from Teletrade's images. Congrats.

So did you give that a bath before you resubmitted it? Also, is that a big hit just above PLURIBUS and below OF?

If you honestly looked at those images and thought "that looks more like a 66CAM to me," then you're a genius. I wouldn't have seen it then and frankly, I still don't see it now.

  • I never said it looked like 66CAM to me when I bought it off of Teletrade. I thought it looked like a possible CAM and for the price it was not hard to pass up. I've bought enough off of Teletrade to understand what their pics show and don't show. The coin didn't need a bath and was submitted as is. A 1965 SMS lincoln in any CAM grade is a hit as it is just about the hardest post-1950 proof/SMS to get to go CAM. I'm not sure what your problem is with this. I have better things to do with my time than make up bogus "scores".

I'm sorry if my earlier posts had the wrong tone - I don't have a problem at all with the grade or your score, I'm honestly impressed at your ability to see the potential in that coin from those pics.

I'm always trying to learn from guys like you, Russ and Marty (and if you want to see how little i've learned so far, go check out the post with *my* latest grades image ), as I've always been a cherrypicker at heart and I think modern SMS and proof coins are the next frontier of the art.

Again, please accept my apologies for any perceived slight, and my sincere congratulations on the coin.

Now that the sale is complete, can you share a link?

  • Good for you, but sad for the poor sucker who sent it to PCGS the first time. That is a recent coin, sometime last fall. Im sure whoever sent it in was expecting a cam designation. They did not get it and you did. What does that say for our grading friends at PCGS. Who do you know there? image

    Eagle7: My thoughts exactly!!!

I think PCGS is great but this kind of thing is not acceptable. The first submitter got ripped by PCGS and has no recourse. I think PCGS should step up to the plate on this kind of thing and offer a refund when it happens. That would really put them on top.

Someone should forward this to Mr. Hall for next weeks Q&A and get his opinion.
