Tips for selling on ebay

Hello All,
I've been gone a while, school and all, but now I'm back and I have a question that I hope someone out there can help me with. You see, I'm looking at selling a few of my coins, and I was wondering if you all had some tips. Although I've bought on ebay, I haven't sold anything as of now, and that has me worried. What I mean is, since I haven't sold anything yet, would that make people wary of buying from me? I'm afraid of listing a coin, and getting screwed because only one guy wants to take a chance by bidding on it. Do you understand what I'm getting at? Has anyone had this problem? How can I counter it? All the coins I want to sell are certified (PCGS or ANACS), I'm registered with paypal, and I have a great digital camera. I figure that's a good enough start, but I would love to hear any tips from the rest of you. Thanks a lot!
Best,
BR

  • First step, is to offer the coins on the BST and avoid as much of the EBay fees as you can... then go to the above link, and then list on EBay image

  • If I understand the heart of your question... how to start from zero... I would say sell one or two coins first. Be simple. Go out of your way to make sure that you are honest, and that ultimately the buyer is happy. As far as being worried about poor response because of no feedback... make sure the first couple of things you sell you can afford to take a beating on.

Promote your auctions in the BST, and I'm sure you'll get some forum members that are more willing to bid, even with low feedback, because you are a forum member... image

I was going to sell on e-bay, but I think I will have russ do it on comission instead.

  • You can sell your coins if you have great feedback with at least 80-100 positives and no negs (even if from buying). Plus, if you've been online awhile (didn't just sign up). You do get less traffic than a mega-store though, so sometimes less bidders. Good luck! cr
  • If push come to shove you can always consign your coins to someone that is already established. The only problem is is that you have to find someone that you trust....There are prob several people on this board that accept consignments...

I would recommend accepting PayPal in your auctions.

I bid in auctions with sellers with low feedback if I can pay with PayPal (hopefully get my money back if it goes bad).

  • I think both Russ and Airplanenut advertise to consign....I don't know what you have to sell or what they would charge...

I'd also list on the BST first... can't hurt. Plus, you can save big on fees, especially for lower-value items. Also, list on the BST when the auctions are live... just put "eBay" in the title or face hell image

  • 1.Payments by pay-pal, or money orders only!!!
2.List the item on the low end of an acceptable sale for you. Don't start at $0.99 like some people do. (Although I do like it when as a buyer when there is only 1 minute left and there has been no bids) image SCORE!!! Somebody just had this A+ deal happen for them on this board.
3.Don't list an item in the middle of the night. As the auction will end in the middle of the night. People tend to bid within the last few minutes. A sale can go up substantially (<<<did I spell that right) in the last few minutes. Plus I get off work alot at about 2 or 3 in the morning, and head straight to e-bay to see if there are any last minute .99 deals going. image (also called snipeing)
4.If it don't sell, list it again.

  • Make sure your auction end on Tuesday,Wednesday,or Thursday. If they end on any of the other days there are too many coins listed.
  • I forgot personally I would recomend starting off the coin at .99 and finally dont screw people on s&h!

    1) Sell a few coins in the lower ranges first...to build up a bit of trust (ie...don't list a $3000 coin as your first sale....list $50-$200 or so).
    2) Common items should go for 7 days....end on Thurs/Sun (for me) in the early evening (West Coast).
    3) HOT items (ie....fads, etc) should go well in 1 or 3 day auctions. That's worked for me...but only for HOT items (ie.....Lewis and Clark C&C set, Wisconsin quarter rolls, etc).
    4) If you want a true auction, great...start LOW. If you have a certain price that you want/need, start it at that price and list a BIN that is reasonably higher....just in case someone wants it that bad
    5) Don't end on holidays/key sporting events
    6) If you do list a BIN, give free S/H/I .... if someone BIN, you may as well reward them
    7) If you can't afford to "self-insure" an item, then make insurance mandatory and/or factor it into your price and include it
(I do this with every BIN I have pretty much...very few exceptions)
    8) Insure for at least $51 so there is a signature
    9) Until you get well known, sell a few at a time to get used to it and so you don't make too many mistakes and suffer for it.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
