I've always been intrigued by the fact that for the better part of U.S. history up until the redesign period of 1909-1916, at any given time our circulating coinage has essentially been dominated by a couple designs simply reduced in size for various denominations. Also, there are more than a few instances where a major design element has been reused. Certainly through all this time there were lovely designs, but I would wonder what the interest would be in a collection of Draped Bust coinage when the coins are essentially the same except for the denomination, Seated coinage when the coins are essentially the same except for the denomination, Coronet Gold coinage...............................
If someone has pictures, could you post a denomination list from the mid 1840's-1860's? I think the entire realm of circulating U.S coinage design from that period was about as ripe as our current ragged upon designs for the two-cent, three-cent and Nickel pieces that were disliked as much as anything for their designs. Man, I guess some things never change!!!!
