Need some help on gold

I've got to plead ignorance on gold, so if anyone can help me by answering some questions it would be appreciated.

On the 1876-CC coin, the reverse has decent lustre and deetail, but the obverse is either worn badly or has a weak strike. Is this normal for these coins? What grade would you give the 1876 coin and what would the coin's value be?

One the 1873-S coin, there are two varieties of the 3 in the date. Could you tell me if this is the open or closed variety? Is this a rare coin? This coin has decent detail and lustre on both side...what would you guess the grade and value at?

1876-CC $20's, according to my references, come weakly struck on the obverse (hair and stars). I would grade your coin, based on the pic and depending on the luster, in the AU-50 to 53 range and would value it at $1300-1500.

The 1873-S is the open "S", the less common of the two varieties. I would grade it at AU-55 and estimate the value at $1500-1700.

My opinion is worth about what you paid for it. image

Edited to add: Both coins are probably worth a visit to PCGS or NGC for professional grading and authentication.

  • I've found that more often than not, the obverse is worn more than the reverse on most coins (silver too) - not sure why its that way.
