I've been holding off on getting a 2005 SAE but now i just might have to do it.

<< <i>The only person I've know to get truly awesome photos from a D70 is Mark - mgoodm3 on the boards. I've spent hours upon hours of dicking with a D70 and it's just not worth the trouble. >>
And this means what in regards to the image I posted?
It comes very close to what I would expect "in-hand" to
look like. Perhaps a little more luster would look even
closer.

Don't take offense by it, but since you asked. I had the same problem when I was messing around with a D70 for work. The images just seemed a bit grainy and very very slightly out of focus. The color was very good though.
It is the best image I've ever seen you post though. Nice Color and excellent lighting.
Grainy? That's what this coin looks like under a loupe.
For comparison, a half dime I posted yesterday:
Personally, I think the half dime looks a little dark and out of focus also. No offense. I guess I'm just a perfectionist. For example, here's a nice Connecticut that I believe is about 99.9% in-focus. It's also in a PCGS slab that had some scratches on it I had to remove with a little buffing. If you've ever imaged coins through slabs and not just raw SAE's and Half Dimes, you know how hard it is to get a good focused shot.
<< <i>The thing is, what you see is what you get. It's doesn't have more luster than what the image shows, it's a very satin like matte type finish. >>
I guess you're right. But I have to agree with the others. It does look
a little grainy. Almost like you would see using high speed film.
Compare to this image I took with the S7000: SAE
(edited: BTW, notice the strike doubling under the leaf in the right field)
In this case I have a single light source (north of the coin). In your
coin, you have multiple light sources. It's a different effect either way.

I'll take image accuracy over trying to present the best image. I don't change how I image my own coins versus what I'm selling.

Are you suggesting the image you posted is a better image than what I posted?
And there are no "others", just you and Brandon, and I find it very interesting that you both appear to be saying the S7000 is a better camera than the D70.
Just for reference, I wasn't using diffuse lighting. I was using a single light source right behind the camera to capture the intense luster on the obverse. The reverse is lightly subdued and carries a heavy yet light patina. I don't think anyone here would agree with you that my image looks washed out.
And about only two of us claiming the S7000 is better than the D70. I never claimed that camera to be better than the D70. Like I stated earlier. mgoodm3 is by far the best when it comes to imaging with a D70. I wish he'd come here and post an image because his images blow all of ours away.
like this. It's all in the eye. And I do like your image. I'm just seeing
some graininess which shouldn't be there. It might be focus or it
might be that you've maginified to image to the point where the matte
grain is more prominent.
I'm not pushing the S7000. If I could afford one I probably would have
gotten the D70 too.
(I think I'll carefully take myself out of the conversation at this point )

I believe in image honesty. Take a SAE out in the sunlight and look at the surfaces with a loupe. The granular surfaces are normal with business strikes. I'm not going to make a business strike SAE look like a proof.
Because, I haven't seen that many threads on someone "Learning" a new camera. I am always glad to offer my opinion and contructive criticism to those who seek it. You said you are still learning the D70.
Why did you post the picture anyway? I was under the impression that you wanted comments on your photo. When you get the comments and they aren't praise, you get all hot and bothered. Lighten up.
But isn't this much more fun?

Eric, I'm not knocking your efforts because they are still better than mine. The pic looks a little grainy compared to Brandon's. What speed are you shooting, and what are your other settings?
<< <i> >>
Now this knocks my socks off. Great pic, lots of detail, luster etc and the pic isn't ridiculously large.
Maybe it is the size of the pic. Here's your pic downsized. I think it looks better!
<< <i>Eric, the 1883 is better -- sharper than the ASE -- but still seems to lack the sharpness of the Conn. It just seems to me that the ASE would be sharper in hand than the pic you put up. The lines just don't seem as crisp. I'm probably not doing a good job of explaining what I mean. >>
Doug, the CT halves are among the easiest coins to photograph because of the bold lettering. I put up the 1200x1200 image to show details you don't usually see in pictures of ASEs.
I love how you keep trying to justify this by trying to make my skills look bad. Frankly, I'm pretty tired of it. You seemed to mellow out when I out-pissed you via PM. What would you consider "Hard to Photograph?" so we can close this deal outside of PMs?
Here are some that will probably get me in trouble with some of the people who think that coins which are for sale should only be posted in the open forum. Since My S7000 and I can only photograph "Easy to Photograph Coins", here are some that aren't Connecticut Commems.
Edited to change the pics to the smaller versions. If you want to see the full size versions please visit our ebay store. Anaconda Rare Coins - Newly Listed Items
From Eric's PM,
And there's the problem. You are looking at imaging coins to put them in the best light to sell. I image coins to accurately show what they look like. Try this with the S700:
After which I replied with:
I hope you aren't implying that my images don't look like the actual coin in-hand. My images are 100% accurate and sometimes not as nice as the actual coin. I have NEVER had someone recieve a coin from me and say "darn, it was so nice in the photo. I just don't think the image was accurate."
If you would like to get into a pissing contest, that's fine with me.
I then posted these images:
Well, ok . . . my last post on the thread because I'm not taking sides.
Poorboy . . . those are some screaming pics!!!!!!!!!
I've often quoted Mark Twain who once said "Don't argue with a fool. Those around you might not be able to tell the difference." In this case however, I think it's pretty obvious that you've resorted to name callingm and people reading this thread can definitely tell who is the real idiot. I've backed up my responses with fact and results. You've basically rambled.
<< <i>Both of you are fine photographers, my personal aesthetic leans towards poorguy's shots although I'm not too keen on the 38 or 70 nickel. But all this posturing is pretty lame, but entertaining. >>
I agree that we are both fine photographers. Eric may even have more patience than I have. I've explaind to Eric that he's done better with the D70 than I ever could, but he incessantly accuses me of lying. This is one thing, as a person who holds honor to high regard, will not tolerate.
<< <i>Brandon, you can stuff your Anacond quotes where the sun don't shine. You started this little thing today, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was at the direction of the snake himself. Pound sand. >>
Adrian has nothing to do with this, and I find it childish of you to try and shift the issue to another subject. Bone up and take a hit when you deserve it.
<< <i>That would be all fine and good Brandon if I had seen you make the same critiques in other picture threads, but I haven't. With the enormous amount of truly blurry, out of focus, and off white pictures that get posted here, you decided to spend most of the day attacking my images. If that isn't bad enough, you started posting PMs which really pisses me off. I didn't respond to your last couple of PMs hoping you would come to your senses, but obviously that isn't the case. Now you are on the warpath, and as I stated above, I don't think you're alone in this little campaign. This smells too much like Adrian Crane for my liking. >>
I posted those PM's because they represent the truth, a behind the scenes look at your precious issue. You can't take criticism and you try and make others look bad when they critique your photographs. I understand that most people don't have a good grasp of imaging their coins. They use scanners, point and shoots, and whatever else they can find to post images of their coins on this forum.
You on the other hand have been posting coins with professional cameras for a while. I am holding you to a higher standard than others who don't have the means to post pics of coins where they've had hours to prepare pictures.
YOU posted a pic and waited for comments. I posted my comments on the pic and you nearly had a coronary. I never said your picture was bad. I just said it was a bit grainy and had an issue with the focus. Then you PM me with this "Calibrate your monitor" crap. I know how to image coins and I have my own preference of what looks good. If you didn't want my comments then you should have taken them with a grain of salt.
Then we come to the "Can your S7000 do this" and when I do better keep quiet until you try to justify your image by saying my image was easy because it's an easy coin to photograph.
Now we are here. What would you like to do?
Oh, and if Adrian had anything to do with it, don't you think he would have chimed in by now?
Personally I find K6AZ's image a bit too large, seeing a mere fraction on my screen doesn't really give me the bigger picture. And if they're too rampant in a thread one MAY THINK IT A VISUAL EQUIVALENT TO WRITING COMPLETELY IN CAPS. Cutting it by 50% would be fine for the forum.
The images may be for selling but that's not what this specific forum is for, is it?
