Net Grades and No Grades

Just a thought...
If I had it my way, I would'nt "body bag" or "net grade" coins that have certain incidental impairments where the surface hasnt been altered in an attempt to make the coin look better than it really is. You know the terms:
Cleaned
Polished
Tooled
Altered surface
Burnished
Artifically toned
and
Severely damaged should also get the boot (ie. holed, severely scratched, obvious graffiti)
I agree these should be rejected or net graded and noted.
However coins that have incidental or moderate scratches, scrapes, gauges, rim bumps, PVC, minor sea water or other minor corrosion should make it into a holder with a single grade that represents a somewhat lower grade (not a net or "Details" grade) than if it did not have the impairment. I have seen this in practice, particularly with "Pedigree" coins - They get it in the holder. But if the average Joe submits a coin with one of these problems, he gets the body bag.
Anyone else share this idea?

But I disagree with the idea of not using a net grade or bodybag. Thats the best part of third party grading in my opinion. Knowing the coin hasnt been messed with - or if it HAS been messed with, knowing exactly what has been done to it.

forgiving on these coins and do indeed net grade. At least Anacs states it on the holder.
I have no problem with them net grading and not stating it on the holder because I give every
potential purchase the evil-eye regardless of what is stated on the holder.
But for many folks that aren't familiar with the series.... they will feel some of these slabbed
coins are problem free due to being blessed by the grading company and holdered as a non-problem coin.
When they have probably been cleaned and other problems. I do believe they take into consideration
how bad the cleaning or other problems are when deciding a grade, or whether to slab or not.
But again, to a newbie it is not a good way to learn what a problem is and is not by going by what is slabbed
with the old classics.
Not one of my better Busties but I like it just the same. The first thing I thought when I seen this coin
was why is it in a Au-50 holder?
It has much more detail than I see slabbed in this grade. It has luster going through the fields,
But in my opinion they net-graded it down for the two scratches on Liberty's jaw-line. There is a small
planchet flaw/lamination in left field but I don't think they knocked it down for that, or the extra dirt in some areas.
I kept the coin because I believe I got a lot of coin for the going rate price of a Au-50. The coin is more
like a au55.
Perfect example. On another day they may have body bagged it or if you sent it to ANACS you may have been stuck with a "DETAILS" grade. The bottom line is its an AU58 without the scratches and a lower AU with them. If the scratches were more serious an XF45 could be given and it would be obvious why it was down graded without the annoying net grade or reject. On a side note, on a couple body bags I got back from PCGS, the grader was at least kind enough to include a short comment regarding an altered surface and concealed grafitti.
Thanks for your contribution.
