PCGS legacy holder

jmcu12jmcu12 Posts: 2,452 ✭✭✭
I am looking for an old PCGS holder. I am not sure what they are called, I call them the legacy ones. Not the rattlers either, but the ones that are about twice the size of any third party holder. Anyone have one for sale or see them on ebay?

Someone showed one in the last year.
They come up very rarely if I recall.

I think others call them "legacy holders" as well.

Good luck...I think they get a premium just for the holder.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Do you mean the Regency holders? The ones that look like coffins? Those are extremely hard to find.

  • They were usually used for special coins, so it will be hard to find one inexpensively. The last one I saw was in the Heritage Fun auction of Dr. Huffnagle's Morgans. It stated it was a possible "possible proof" CC . Hertage called the holder something else, but Legacy is correct. You can look the coin and holder up at www.Heritagecoin.com under their auction history (I remember it as a 1892CC). Cameron Kiefer would know more.

    All slabs look like coffins.

(Dorkkarl hasn't been around for a while - somebody has to fill in).

As noted by Jeremy, it's Regency.

    Yeah...what they said....Regency, not legacy.
    I was wrong.

  • The intent if I remember of the Regency Holder was to write a note on the coin's Legacy, commonly ownership or to whom it was being given (ie. John Doe grandkids)

While the pedigree of a coin was frequently noted on them, anybody could get their coin holdered in one just by ponying up the extra bucks.

Yes Regency is what I am looking for. I really want one. Guess I have to keep looking.

    Thanks everyone.

  • Good luck, they don't show up very often, and when they do expect to pay anywhere from $125 to $300 premium for the holder. Your best chance for a cheap one would be if you can find a piece from the Danny Kaye collection. They slabbed a lot of his israeli coins in them. the coins are inexpensive and it keeps the cost of the slab down. (About $100 for a $15 coin.)

    jmcu12:

Here is a PCGS Regency holder silver dollar. A very common Morgan dollar in a very common condition.

What makes this Regency holder special is that it was slabbed at the 1995 ANA show and noted as such.

Below that one is an 1878 doubled die reverse $20 Liberty gold coin also in a Regency holder. Not a cheap coin at all.

I have a Regency Holder which came in a Green Velvet Bag. Was the bag part of the Regency package?

PCGS would also note any varieties on the Regency holders that would not otherwise be recognized. So, you also find a lot of these with some esoteric variety.

Yes, indeed. The green velvet bags are even rarer than the regency holders nowadays. Hang onto it.

Back then PCGS bagged the coins even after slabbing them. image

WH: Not only that but PCGS also slabbed all kinds of family names and "trust" names on them long before pedigrees became popular.

19Lyds, In my case it's been turned on its head. I buy the holder, not the coin.
