This doesn't make any sense... grades... good and really bad...

The first submission is exactly what I expected on everything... the second... NOTHING was what I expected. These coins were all lock ms66's with the 84-d's all lock ms67's. Why would I be so right on the first submission and so wrong on the next? I've collected these for 2+ years, been submitting them for almost a year now, I know what I'm doing...

I've noticed similar on my submissions (a lot more so as of late)...and have a theory I've developed.

Disclaimer, this is clearly pure conjecture -- but there's a reason behind why I've developed this theory:

- They get a batch

- They look at the first coin/two in the batch

- If the first one/two are CLEARLY a lock at a certain grade, meaning they don't have to look at it 2x, they grade it

+ If not, they spend 2-3 more seconds on it and grade it lower

- This sets the tone for how they will look at the rest of the batch

Meaning, when they look at the first 1-2 coins in a large submission and they are impressed, and it grades well, they will be looking at the rest of the coins through the same "rose colored" lenses. If the first 1-2 coins are "tweeners" (e.g. could grade either way), they will scrutinize the rest of the batch and every coin becomes a stretch.

Since we don't know which coin they'll look at first, it's a crapshoot. So, the good submissions are probably the ones on which they pick up the first coin or two, and they're real nice. And the OK submissions, are the ones where the first coin or two are "tweeners".

The reason why I've developed this theory is because -- well, honestly -- I kind of do the same thing myself. If I'm at a show, etc., and the display has some coins I want to see, and the first 1-2 I like, I'll look at the rest with "rose colored" glasses. If the first 1-2 coins I look at are not properly graded/represented, I'll play the "devil's advocate" on all the other coins I look at in the display.
