Assembling future HoF Set(s)...input wanted.

I thought it would be fun to start collecting HoF players with rookie cards in the 80s (the heydey of my collecting). There is currently the 1983 Topps of Boggs and Sandberg, and the 84 Fleer Update Puckett.

Here's the list of cards I see:

1980 Topps Henderson
1984 Fleer Update Clemens
1982 Topps Cal Ripken, Jr.

Also would like to start one of these in football.

Whether or not this ever becomes an 'offical' set or not isn't my concern, I just think it would make a neat set of players I grew up watching.

    '83 Topps Tony Gwynn
    '85 Topps Mark McGwire
    '86 Fleer Update Barry Bonds
    '87 Donruss Greg Maddux
    '87 Donruss Rafael Palmeiro
'88 [Donruss or Score Traded, it depends on how you define rookie] Roberto Alomar
'89 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr.
    '89 Upper Deck Randy Johnson

Biggio, Smoltz, Glavine, Schilling, Sheffield, and a few others are strong possibilities.

  • glavine is a given, in my opinion. He may not reach 300, but a world series ring, a world series MVP, 2 cy youngs and great all around numbers should open the HOF door.

  • Football is tough because you have all the positions, and lots of guys who make the Hall aren't necessarily mega-super stars.

    80 (P Simms)
    81 Montana Winslow (Monk Hampton)
    82 LT Lott Munoz
    83 Allen Singletary
84 Marino Elway Dickerson Green: USFL White Kelly Young (Walker)
85 (Moon - or the CFL)
    86 Rice Smith
    87
    88 (Bo)
89 Aikman Sanders (Deion T Thomas D Thomas)

I'm sure I have missed some of the O and D lineman, punters/kickers, and defensive players.

Don't forget the '84 Howie Long. Also, how about the '89 Michael Irvin, '85 USFL Doug Flutie and '88 Vinny Testaverde. The last two will be interesting to consider, since Flutie has over 50,000 career passing yards (counting CFL) and Testaverde has over 40,000 yards. Remember, the Hall of Fame is the "Pro Football Hall of Fame", not the "NFL Hall of Fame"image They should be considering leagues besides the NFL.

Which card will be considered Steve Young's RC? Or has it be chosen already?

I'd pick the '84 Topps USFL...his first pro card.

Tim Brown and Cris Carter ('89 Score) are locks for the HOF as well.

  • Rod Woodson should be thrown in the mix as well.
