Hey guys. My grades are posted today (edited, finally figured out the link) for my little contest.
6 cards submited.....6 10s. I batted 1.000.
The 2 winners are Perry and Bob:
Pandrews' guesses: 1) 10, 2) 10, 3) 9, 4) 10, 5) 9, 6) 10
Onlypsahockey's guesses: 1) 10, 2) 9, 3) 9, 4) 10, 5) 10, 6) 10
Runner up: SDavid made it close with 1) 10, 2) 10, 3) 9, 4) 10, 5) Evid of Trim, 6)10
The Evid of Trimming guess would had to be a 9 for 3 way tie.
Perry and Bob; PM me with your address and I'll ship you out your prizes.
Thanks!
P.S. Bob, isn't this your second contest won within 3 weeks? You're not allowed to play anymore j/k.

Congrats!
I have a 10X loupe but hardly ever use it.
Most of the stuff is just looked under a lamp and I know what
they're looking for.
"eagle eye kid".. thats why it was 6 out of 6!..

Are you saying that, if I have a card with corner wear that's visible under a 10X lighted lense, I shouldn't worry about it if it's invisible to the naked eye? I because I've had a few cards like that....where there was just one little speck of wear showing under magnification...and I've sold them raw.

If your card has corner wear, you shouldn't need a loupe to see it. A lighted loupe is a horrible instrument. First of all, it bothers and makes my eyes watery and you'll perceive things that aren't there. This is the way I look at it. If I can see any type of flaw while rotating the card under my lamp with the naked eye, PSA will see it too. If you start to use a 10X magnifying loupe for every single card for every single criteria (edges, surface, corners), your judgement will be tainted in the long run. Yes, some cards would need the loupe (vintage, highly counterfeited cards) but most won't. What will happen is you'll start to get used to the blown up spec that you see for that corner, or that miniscule print dot will now look like a dime size dot. If I can't see any chipping or corner spec with the naked eye, I won't look closer. The only time I use my loupe is to check for surface imperfections and catch fakes (matrix dots) and to see if that corner is indeed sharp. Most of the time, a sharp corner under a loupe will not look sharp under magnification; so don't worry too much about it. Do this with practice and you'll eventually get the hang of it. The best advice I ever received was from Mike Baker about 2 years ago after talking to him for about an hour while he was doing my pre-grades at a show and basically asked him all kinds of questions. After he finished with my cards, he let me stay and talk to him while he was looking at other people's pre-grades. The bottom line is, it shouldn't take you more than 20 seconds to grade a card. You follow and stick to the proper protocol. Check centering first....rotate and make sure that it's SQUARE and at this point edges will come into play to see if hooking, wavy edges, or anything on the edges might been touched up. Rotate for surface inspection. Corners are pretty easy. Not much to do there. If it takes you more than 3 minutes to grade the card, your judgement or first impression is completely blown and your grade will be off and you'll have to start all over. The only time I saw Mike use a loupe was for corners and edges because he saw one card that was questionable for trimming after he first suspected it. That was for some guy's modern order. Another time was for some vintage cards because of potential counterfeits. I didn't grasp what he said at first; but I got the hang of it after a few months. It just takes practice and now I see everything clearly. I also work in a lab looking for fine details after the Crime Scene Investigation sickos bring in their goodies. I think what I do for a living has helped me with card grading as well.
