PCGS OR NGC?

Which grading do you choose and why?
Thank you for all the great info so far

  • Both -- PCGS for my Jeff toners and pre-1916 proof sets and NGC for my toned Peace $ set, Lincoln toner set and post-1916 proofs.

I also have PCGS for my Modern Proof Type set, Ikes, SBAs and SACs.

At the moment I would choose PCGS but only by a whisker. I also prefer their holder style. image

PCGS - if you want the best, pay the most, and wait the longest.
NGC - 80% - 90% of PCGS value but cheaper and faster when grading. Might grade some series looser than PCGS, but has tightened recently.
ANACS - die varities, fastest and cheapest. Reputable. In my experience most ANACS grade the same at PCGS/NGC (and I've tested this through Mint State crackouts). There are exceptions however, due to philosophy. If 95% of the coin is AU50 and 5% XF45, at ANACS this is an AU50 coin. At PCGS this is an XF45 coin.

  • Personally I use NGC for a few reasons.
    1. Cheaper & Faster- If you use online submission Modern Crap is only $10 per coin and you can get other coins graded for $14.50 if you are willing to wait 28 Days.

    2. Five Early Birds submissions for your $99 membership....$150 Value

    3. Good customer service

    4. All the complaints I have heard from Forum members about length of time to get coins has kept me away from PCGS.

Drawbacks to NGC IMHO-----Coins of similar grades not as much value. Boards are not as cool, or informative.
  • I like NGC for service and speed. PCGS for Quality. I have recently started a Washington 32-64 Registry set. (DON'T ASK ME WHY... I'M JUST A FOOL I GUESS) Anyway, NGC is noticeably more liberal in their grading of Washingtons and it is greatly reflected in Auction prices. PCGS coins go for sometimes 100% more than NGC. For example I have a 1945 MS 66 Washington PCGS Pop is 169 in 66 and 10 in 67. But NGC has 272 in 66 and 79 in 67. It seems to me it's like that with every coin in this series. If you look at the prices... $125.35 PCGS MS 66 Heritage on 2/8/05. The most recent NGC sale in 66 was $41.00 on 11/8/04 (so take this with a grain of salt as we all know what the coin market has done in the last year...) Notice also that the same day that Heritage sold an NGC 66 for $41.00 a PCGS 66 sold for $81.65.

Not that I am anti NGC like I said I actually like all the top 4 TPG's. Just for different things and different reasons.

PCGS; Gotta think about value if/when you sell them.
I'm the Proud recipient of a genuine "you suck" award dated 1/24/05. I was accepted into the "Circle of Trust" on 3/9/09.

    I buy PCGS coins.

From everything I read when I started buying such coins a few years ago and everything I have continued to read they are the toughest graders of the lot. This was a big plus.

I also prefer the PCGS holder to the NCG holder as well.

One of these days I will get around to selling my NGC MS-63 1925 Peace Dollar I do have, or trading it for a PCGS Peace.

I like the look of PCGS slabs for my Buffalo nickels, but for Lincolns, I have no preference.

Buyer and seller of vintage coin boards!
  • I prefer both. But it's easier, IMO, to photograph a coin in PCGS plastic than one in NGC.

Actually, I choose the coins, and my coins happen to be in both holders.

I have about half PCGS and half NGC coins.

But it's easier, IMO, to photograph a coin in PCGS plastic than one in NGC.

    I agree.
  • PCGS!! Like their operation, and seem to be more recognized in the industry.

I rarely buy either one, and submit to both. I like the design of the PCGS holder better, though. Frankly, I think the NGC holder sucks for most coins.

Edited to add: Unless I'm planning to crack them out for a resub shot. image
