New Purchase: 1878-S PCGS MS-65 PL Morgan Dollar

StuartStuart Posts: 9,761 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was pleased to purchase this 1878-S PCGS MS-65 PL Morgan Dollar this evening.

Here is the link to the E-Bay auction with seller's photos. I'll post updated photos with my impressions of the
coin after I receive it and have a chance to carefully examine it.

My initial impression from the photos provided is that I like the cameo contrast and the strike of the coin, and
that perhaps it missed the DMPL designation due to the smokey toned areas in the fields of the coin.

Thanks to all of you for your positive comments and posts about my new 1878-S PCGS MS-65 PL purchase.

Jeff, I am not familiar with the VAM-17 variety that you mentioned. What does it designate? Thanks!!

Here are the auction coin photos for reference.

  • Nice coin Stuart. Perhaps the Vam 17 referred to is the two dashes/blobs just to the left of the bottem of the hair of liberty in the field. See the picture in Van Allen and Mallis page 169, photo of obv. 17O Dash 7, overpolished die.

Like MorganNut2 mentioned, VAM 17 has the over polished hair below the mongram on the neck and the unengraved wing. Look for denticle marks around the OL of DOLLAR and to the left and below the tail feathers. If it has those, then it's a VAM 17A.
