Canadian coin photo experiments

Here is a 2002 proof Tulip in the Canadian flower series that Luvdawgs showed one of recently. I am working on my photo skills and this presented a real challange because of the extremely refelective fields and the golden tulips. Check out the extreme cameo on this coin - I wish my photos showed it better.

  • Great pics. image
  • Great Pictures. Looks like one light from upper left. Did you try two lights one left and right. I'm finding I have to use 40watts or smaller for dual lighting to work without a washout effect.

  • Have you tried reflecting light with & shooting through a piece of glass angled at 45 degrees?

  • I haven't tried the glass at 45 degrees angle but really want to try - I have to build a rig for it - but am going to do it.
I use 3 lights one has a Reveal bulb, one has a white light and one is a small lamp that I move around a lot - I also take quite a few photos using many light positions and then do a slide show on them, eliminate the ones I don't like then take them into Picture It (wish I had Photoshop) and crop and resize them.

Still haven't reached the level of some of the people who post here, but it is fun to try to get that "good one".

  • I just tried the 45 degree trick last week & was amazed how easy it is to get good results.
It works especially well for silver...eliminates those hot white reflective highlights.

You don't need anything fancy. I use a scrap piece of plexiglass held at an angle by a bent piece of wire. My camera stand is a vertical threaded bolt with a bracket to attach the camera onto. Light is an OTT-Light desk lamp tipped on its side.
For inexpensive photo editing, use Paint Shop Pro. Much less than Photoshop and just as many features.

Here's a quick shot I made of a Merc. dime using the setup describe above(photo quality reduced by jpg compression). I was able to get even lighting on the obverse using just the OTT light low from the side, instead of the typical overbright highlights.
