K-711 SPORTS AWARD MEDAL TRIAL CASTS, 1912, 2 pieces: Obverse: Cast incuse reverse metal with CU plate on design side 47.2mm, Wt. 14.2g. UNIQUE. Reverse: Cast incuse reverse metal with brass plate on design side. 47.2mm, Wt. 21.0g. UNIQUE.
Obverse Legend: St. Georg, patron – German ball and gymnastic club, Ober-Lechgau, founded 1910.
Reverse Legend: Honor to Youth, defense to the Fatherland. In field: Top winner award in sports.
I, nor anyone else I have spoken with, is aware if this medal was actually ever fully created into medal form. Even Kienast had only an ‘image’ from Goetz’s proof book to display in his Volume II reference. What I find interesting, besides the beautiful design on the obverse, is that there is a lightly scribbled and incised number on the reverse of both these trials that designate the piece as #657 and not the K711 that Kienast designated. The inscription is in Karl Goetz’s handwriting as verified by Kienast.
Since these pieces are incuse reversed casts (mirror image) I have ‘flipped’ the image horizontally in order for it to appear as it would had it been cast. To bring out the detail of the designs, I have also created negative (color only) images for you to view.
Just look at the artistic ability on this obverse!!!!
