Westward Journey 2005

Just a couple questions about this series.......Why are the Peace Medal's so much more desirable than the Keelboats? I see the PM Nickels are running 35-45 per 2 Roll Set on Ebay, where KB's are more like 10-12 per two roll set.

What about the 2005 Nickels....Would you expect them to go pretty fast? and Would you expect a similar rise in price when Mint Sells out?

Just Curious, I'm not too into these but couldn't help notice the attention they seem to be getting.

  • Hopefully someone can come along and provide a explanation, at least one that makes some sense. I have wondered the same and can only figure that most folks were not aware that the peace medal nickels were available until too late thus a lower mintage than the keelboat. What do others think?
  • Hello all,

These are just my personal thoughts, but maybe others feel the same way. image

I think the Peace Medal just looks better. I have the same feeling for the "Ocean" '05 coin, I think it will be forgotten compared to the beloved buffalo nickel.

This brings up a long term play scenario, as I (and I'm sure many of the other board members) are going to buy the buffalo nickel in quantity, there should be no shortage of excellent examples available for years to come, but what if no one really saves the "Ocean" nickel?

...I might just buy a couple of rolls "in case". image

I'd give you the world, just because...

Speak to me of loved ones, favorite places and things, loves lost and gained, tears shed for joy and sorrow, of when I see the sparkle in your eye ...
and the blackness when the dream dies, of lovers, fools, adventurers and kings while I sip my wine and contemplate the Chi.

When the Peace nickel was selling at the Mint. The description said they would be available until 3 MONTHS after the release of the next nickel, which was in August. I was buying proofs sets and stuff and I figured I'd pick up the nickels the next month, after all the Mint said they would be available. Then Bamm! sold out!!

That's why they sell for more, same with the uncirculated sets that they 'abruptly' stopped selling. Caught everyone by surprise, now if you want one you need to go to Ebay.

I did notice that the kealboat says available until the next nickel OR until sold out.

There will be plenty of Buffalo nickels to go around.
  • Never listen to everything the mint says. I got burned last year on the clad proof sets, waited until too late. Thats why now I buy it when it becomes available.

Don't put off until tommorrow what you can do today. Word to live by.
  • Probably because when the peace medals were sold a bunch were broken up looking for quality pieces. When it turned out they were junk some were just roken up and spent. Then the roll price started rising. Since the peace medal rolls went up people bought up the keelboat rolls. But they didn't get broken up. So now they are more available and therefore lower in price. (The Peace medals are also a little less available simbly because they are older and have been somewhat dispursed.)
  • I sure hope the quality of the Buffy's are better than the Peace - those were outrageously horrible (the bulk). I can't wait to get the little Buffys!!!

Also depends on how difficult it is to get high grade specimens. The piece nickels were of crappy quality this year so many wanted to search through rolls to find a nice one.

Mr Terrapin... How about that the Peace coins are the first in the series... not as many were minted (off the top of my head)... and the quality of the strike wasn't as good (especially for the P mint) as documented by the low amount of MS67's and 8's compared to the other 2004 mintages.

For all... better get in line for the buffalos! But the oceans coin will be where the big money is at the end of the year.

Anybody have a ballpark for how many buffalos will be graded by PCGS as MS69? or 68?
