"This smartly struck example which has excellent hair definition has, unfortunately, been lightly cleaned long ago, and probably won't grade at a major service (although we've seen many common date bust dollars with greater problems in PCGS or NGC holders). "

What is ANACS to these people, a potted plant? The "big three" TPG services, in alphabetical order, are:
    1. ANACS
    2. NGC
    3. PCGS

  • This raises my eyebrows. With a coin this expensive why wouldn't they get it in an ANACS slab? I'll just ask the question... any wild chance it's a fake? image

If the coin is rare enough, PCGS will grade it regardless of the problem.

How would that enhance the value? It's about the coin, not the plastic.
  • What would it be worth at a grade of 40 if it were not cleaned?

How long would you have to carry it as a pocket piece to get it in a PCGS slab?

Because of the guaranty of authenticity backed with $$$$$'s

Really? You know this for a fact? David Hall told you so?

Yes, it's about the coin, we all know that. So, you have no fear buying a $80K raw coin, even if you believe it's authentic? The reason to buy a slabbed expensive coin is at least you have a "guarantee" authenticity by the major TPG services. If you buy a raw expensive coin without guarantee, and it turns out to be fake, you are screwed. JMHO.

Please, come join us in the real world. PCGS will often net grade a problem rare date without notation if the 'right 'person submits it. Even NGC is easing a bit on their stance from slabbing better date problem coins.

That hair looks awfully well defined. Is it possible it has been tooled, and that is the reason it's not in an anacs slab?

Please, don't patronize me, like I didn't know that already. But, let me clarify for you, regardless?

  • << <i>try this B&M catalog description on for size...lot 1042 paul mory collection sale on 6/2000...'vg-8(pcgs) but cleaned, burnished, re-engraved at portions of the design, and lightly pitted in areas. Overall sharpness is vf-20 or so'... >>

How much more regardless would you like?

Dude, you fail to see my point. I'm gonna just leave it at that.

Who are the 'right' people? image

I agree with the earlier posts. This coin should have gone to ANACS for grading. Very reputable, especially in situations like this.

Not you or me but smoebody is getting those coins into holders.

  • ANACS would be my first choice. But, what about NCS?
