Does anyone care about proof Seated Liberty Dime varieties?

This coin caught my attention on eBay a few days ago, when I was casually looking for a proof Barber dime. I put in a low bid, at first, but upped it last night after I checked out my Walter Breen Encyclopedia. The coin pictured appears to be the rare "shield II" or "six lines" variety (Breen 3319), which is found on no business strike 1860 dimes. The variety was first reported by Douglas Winter in 1982. The usual "shield I" or "five lines" (Breen 3318) variety has a fatterm straighter index finger and only five vertical lines above and to the right of E in LIBERTY. The eBay seller's picture clearly shows a thin, curved index finger and six vertical lines.

This auction is ending right about now, so I'll go back to see if I was outsniped.

Rarity "unknown" according to dismeguy. See seateddimevarieties.com for more info.

I sniped it! - for less than the PCGS online price in PR-64. I doubt if the seller's PR-66 grade will translate into plastic at any of the respectable grading companies, but I've been very satisfied with every coin purchased from this seller before.

Now the question is, which grading service to send this to? I'll be happy if a major calls it PR-64, and happier if one (ANACS?) notes the variety.

The bidding results show me that not too many look for this obscure variety in this long and tough series. I bid on it because I liked the strike, the colors, and the seller. It is probably too expensive for my Dansco type set album (where I'm afraid it might get slide marks). I'll decide what to do with it soon after I pick it up from the post office.

Dunno much or usually care much about varieties, but I do love yummy Type coins, particularly proof Type!

    Sweet!

    ccex,

I would be curious as to your impression of the variety once you see the coin in person. I too saw this dime and passed as it appeared to be a typical 1860 F-101 proof dime. See the pic below and note the date position on both coins. If the coins turns out to be a Type II obverse, then I would like to examine it and publish the photographs in my web-book.
