When did PCGS start designating Full Step jeffs?

This most certainly has been asked before but I did a search through the archives and could not find the answer. When did PCGS start designating Full Step jeffs?

Been since at least 96 or 97 I think... cause in 99, they were there in some numbers. Why? Just wondering...

I was wondering if some of the older holdered coins could be FS without it being stated on the label. Thanks BTW - What holders were being used then?

I have been wondering the same thing. I was offered a 1943/2 in a ms-66 holder (green) which was not designated FS. The owner claimed it was.

Well, I know I've seen some of the green tabs with FS annotation... I dont think I've seen (or dont remember seeing) a yellow tab or earlier slabs with that designation, so that maybe the difference.

Also, I've seen a bunch of people with PCGS coins without the designation say the coin in question had full steps... only to have the coin in hand have something wrong which precluded the designation... so Caveat Emptor! I think someone would be slightly nuts not to have a 43/2 in PCGS MS66 designated if the coin was full steps... what a price difference.

    Hope this helps!

  • I'm pretty certain it was during the green label era that they started.

    I still have an NGC-graded 44-S 66FS coin that I bought in May '97. I
believe that PCGS started designating them sometime after that.

a quick glance through the quarterly pop reports i have shows that in October of 1997 PCGS hadn't yet started designating Full Steps but in July of 1998 they are listed in the report. my guess is that it would have been early spring in 1998, probably after the F.U.N. Show and at least a little publicity and an attempt to get the word out. the July 1998 report fails to differentiate between MS and MSFS in the totals at the top of the series listing and the numbers are still quite low, most in single figures. some common Full Step dates and theie July 1998 totals:

    1941-D/4.
    1942-D/3.
    1943-D/7.
    1944-D/8.
    1946-D/2.
    1950-D/19, WOWZER, what a surprise!!!!!!!!!!!!!
