Wife's circulation find.

My wife, knowing I am a hobby enthusiast, looks at her change for old coins. (I few years ago she found a 1924 S penny in change).

A few days ago she told me she had gotten an old wheatback penny in change. She had misplaced it and it took a couple of days to find it. Two days ago we found it in her car. I looked at it and found that it is dated 1919. Philly mint. Probably in fine condition. Full rims, clear lettering, wear but no distracting marks or dings.

By coincidence, today is her father's birthday. He was born in......... 1919. We are thinking of sending him the penny as a birthday present.

Interesting find by her.

    While we're on the subject...

I went out to buy milk early this morning and received a 1918 penny back in change.

Oldest one I've ever received in change.

Sounds like that million penny hoard that was cashed in is spreading around the country.

That's really interesting. Also interesting is the global set of dynamics that influence survival & condition of coin populations generally -- everybody hoards coin X or Y, until they realize 20 years after they hoarded it that so did everybody else, thus it's worthless. Then they circulate. Eventually, game dynamics result in there being only so many left in mint state -- or whatever the 'better' condition range is for the thing in question -- that the premium on them encourages those that still have them not to spend them at face. Who knows where it all stops or sits still.

I haven't seen any signs of the million penny hoard here in VT. Lots of silver clad halves around for those who want to sort rolls, but I haven't gotten a wheatie in a long time. A 1910 some years back, but none at all lately.
