Please help with the identification of this unknown bird lead seal

Hi,

Any help identifying this one sided lead seal would be greatly appreciated.
It appears to depict either a duck, ibis or heron. It also has a salmon in front of the bird.

Thank you

  • Wish I could be of help but all i can do is chime in with the
observation that there REALLY needs to be a guidebook done on
old lead seals-- roman, byzantine, british, french, dutch. I have a
few that i would love to know the backgrounds of but i cannot find any good reference material. These coin-like pieces have some
fascinating but mysterious designs on them.
  • I could not agree with you more regarding a guidebook needing to be done about these old lead seals. It is nice to know that I'm not alone with these unidentified seals, and any sound in the world of ancient seals is still music in its own right, so I thank you for your chime.

I can't really help here, but I can say that I have seen a reference or two. However, I believe they were scholarly monographs and I don't recall anything more about them. You might check with the libraries of the ANS or ANA.

  • I have several sitting in a box in Miami that came from FRENCH WINE Bottles and one with a Heron that came from a Russian bottle of bubbly 1878. It would be an interesting project to research.
