Calling Mr K6AZ

Hi there, just read your post about a real MS61 Morgan. Neat and informative. Was wondering if you could do me (and the rest of the forum) a favor by posting a line up of Morgan pictures just like the MS61 post and do a 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67, and higher if you've got em. I'm trying to get better at grading morgans.
Eric.

Maybe I will do that sometime. Right now the highest grade I have is 66, and every grade down to GD06. I'm still working out some bugs in my photo setup, so maybe in a few days when I have those issues cleared up I will do it.
  • There are two problems with doing this:

    1. this would only be beneficial and informative if the coin is typical for the grade
    2. there's alot that goes into the grade other than being clear of marks so you
can't necessarily compare two coins with the same grade

to make this a useful learning tool, you would need to find typical coins and
make sure they have average strike, luster and color for the grade. And this is not
    easy.

In short, you cannot compress the knowledge and experience gained from looking
at thousands of coins into a small set. I'm afraid it would mislead alot of people.

But, you are on the right track. Keep looking at coins or good pictures of coins
and you will get better at it.

If you want to learn how to grade MS Morgans, then you really need to see a bunch of them in person. A progressive set of photos, while valuable, will not replaced having the coins in hand.

If you really want to get intensive experience, try taking the ANA Summer Seminar Grading or Advanced Grading courses. Twenty-seven hours of hands-on instruction from NGC, ANACS, and PCGS graders.

I assumed it was a given that I meant coins typical for the grade. If it wasn't, then I am now stating it. I've seen lots and lots of Morgans, and have my own ideas...but K6AZ is kind of an authority on the subject, and I would love to see what he posts. No part of me believes it will substitute for years of experience, but i'd still reall like to see it. (especially the way he images coins).

Thanks for mentioning the ANA class by the way, I was actually planning on doing that, and its nice to have the reminder.

great link! thank you. But Eric, if you're ever up to it, I'd still love to see your pictures along with ideas and opinions on the different grades - When you get the chance.
