My First CC Coin!

YAAAAAAAAAY! I finally have a CC coin even on my meager budget! image I've been putting together a set of coins from 1880 since that is 100 years before my birthday and have already put together all of the 'cheaper' coins, in a sense. I was also able to get myself my first gold coin while doing this which is an 1880 $5 which looks really good. Today, I was looking around on E-Bay for an affordable 1880-CC Morgan Dollar since I already have an O, P, and S Morgan from that year. I found one auction and thought that the coin looked pretty good for the price being asked. It wasn't in as good a shape as many of the CC 1880 Morgans there, but it also didn't cost two or three months worth of salary like most of the 1880-CC Morgans. So I placed my bid and actually won! Someone tried to bid at it during the last minute, but I still managed to take it. Below are the pictures from the E-Bay auction. When I get the coin, I'll take some pictures as well. What do you guys think of it, and how much would you have been willing to spend on it? (I just want to know if I perhaps may have paid too much for the condition it's in. Still, similar priced 1880-CC Morgans on E-Bay are FAR more worn and have far less detail. This one just looks like it's 'dirty').

funny, the 80-cc is one of the last two I need for the whole Morgan set (no-95)
  • Yeah, it was the last Morgan I needed in my 1880 set aside from the Proof one. (Though I'm going to get the proofs last unless one comes up and just floors me with a low price). The 1880-CC has been bugging me for a while because I only seemed to find the VERY high priced ones that I couldn't see spending that much money on. If I'm going to be spending over 400 on a coin, I'd want there to be close to an ounce of gold in there. image

I'd call it close to VF and pay about $120 if its not been cleaned.
  • Good good. image I paid 142 which included shipping. So I don't think I got taken badly, if at all. I'm just waiting for the coin to arrive and the person running the auction simply called it 'fine' and was very honest with the description. Here's a link to the auction in case you're wondering. (I just wanted to get at least one honest opinion before posting what I spent. image)

    Linky.

Honestly, I'm not crazy about the rim taps on the upper reverse, but I hope you're happy with it when it arrives. An 1880-CC is not going to get much cheaper than that, anyway. image

Heh, that was my exact thinking. The only other 1880-CCs for a similar price that I could find were HEAVILY worn and almost flat in spots where it shouldn't be.

BTW, the seller mentioned that if I don't like the coin in any manner, I can return it for a full refund within 7-days of receiving it. So the seller does not appear to be a bad one and his opinion on the grade doesn't seem to be inflated. I just can't wait for it to arrive. I got my first gold coin late last year, and now I have my first coin with a two-letter mint-mark. image (Yes, these simple things thrill me. lol).

Appears to me to be a low VF, like a VF20. It also appears to have had an old cleaning. But, at $120, as has been said, that's about as cheap as you will find any 80-CC Morgan.
  • Here's a picture of an 1882-CC I got as a kid that looks very similar to yours wear-wise:

Interesting thing is that the dealer I bought this coin from had it graded as Fine, but I've always thought that it was a VF coin -- sounds like we're in a similar situation!

Yours has just the slightest amount of wear beyond Jdurg's. While Jdurg's has been cleaned, yours hasn't and has a very nice original look to it. As far as I can tell, it's really a tossup between F15 and VF20, but I would give it the bump for the original look.

  • Nice pick-up,

I too need a 80cc for my Morgan Dansco set. That coin was on top of my buy list at the coin show this past weekend, could'nt find one that I liked.image

You did good and hopefully the coin will be to your liking when it arrives.

  • I'm hoping to see the coin later this week or this weekend. The seller has been magnificent in terms of communication and whatnot. An invoice was sent within minutes of the auction ending, and the shipping information was sent to me mere minutes after I had paid. He has been very honest with the description and mentioned the return policy which is a big plus. Basically, if I get the coin and just don't like it, I can return it within 7-days for a full refund. So really it's an almost "can't lose" situation. Sure I'd like to have an MS-65 version of the 1880-CC coin, but on my budget that won't happen. I'm just happy to know that I have a sample of every Morgan Dollar from 1880 aside from a proof coin. (And while it's not a CC version, My 1880-S could possibly grade an MS61-62 if it were slabbed. The coin has a beautiful cartwheel luster which is original, and is only marred by some nicks and dings in the fields and a scratch on the reverse. I've been trying to take pictures of it to show here on the boards, but I can't seem to capture the brilliance in the luster. Still, it's a nice high quality example of a Morgan for my year set that I got for a great price).
