I was motivated after reading the thread posted by FC57coins on the Franklin half dollar and thought I would elaborate on the particular series I specialize in. Many thanks go out to Russ for the use of his photogrpahs. We will begin by going over the fisrt year the 1964 Kennedy and its varieties and special points. All information can be referenced below for further information.
1964:
Mintage: 3,950,762
Population estimate cameo proof: proof 65 3,000-6,000 proof 66 6,000-12,000 proof 67+ 4,000-8,000
Population estimate DCAM proof: proof 65 500-1,000 proof 66 750-1,500 proof 67+ 500-1,000
Population estimate cameo proof accented hair: proof 65 500-1,000 proof 66 500-1,000 proof 67+ 200-400
Population estimate DCAM proof accented hair: proof 65 100-200 proof 66 100-200 proof 67+ 25-50
Key points to remember: 1964 Mint state examples, roll contact marks are very common. Look for roll friction on neck, hair and face for the obverse and for the reverse neck tail and shield. Luster will be frosty to very frosty. Strike is sometimes weak on the 1964 and most other issues. This weakness is located on bust and upper hair on the obverse, the reverse is weak on the stars, upper shield, head and tail of eagle, and the ribbon. Proof examples, hairlines plague the year especially the accented hair variety. The fields shold be deeply mirrored, with the fisrt few strikes of each die being DCAM and cameo. Moderate to heavy cameo 1964 Kennedys are semiscarce. Gem examples of the accented hair in cameo are scarce, and DCAM examples are rare. Strike should be full on all proofs except for those struck on worn dies.
Varieties:
Proof: 1964 ACCENTED HAIR ODV-001/RDV-001, 1964 TRANSITIONAL ODV-002/RDV-001, 1964 DDO-001, DDO-002, DDO-003, DDO-004, DDO-005, DDO-006, DDO-007
Mint state: 1964-D DDO-001, DDO-002, DDO-003, DDO-004, DDO-005, DDO-006, DDO-007, DDO-008, DDO-009, DDO-010, DDO-011, DDO-012
Variety in review: accented hair and transitional variety
Accented hair ODV-001/RDV-001: this is the first die for the Kennedy series. The lower left serif on the I of LIBERTY is weak. It is master die doubled with a light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and date. The first reverse die also for the series has a straight G design on the designers initials. Rays are not continuous through the stars. This die is also master die doubled with a light spread on UNITED STATES OF, and HALF DOLLAR. To date all ODV-001 examined have been mated with RDV-001. Doubling will vary depending on hub and sie state.
Transitional: RDV-001 reverse paired to the second obverse design is what makes the transitional variety the accented hair is eliminated and I in LIBERTY is strengthened. This variety is master die doubled with a light spread on WE TRUST, 64 of date, TY of LIBERTY and the hair under the R of LIBERTY. Remeber that this is a small percentage, exact number is unknown by me.
I hope you enjoyed reading this and fall in love with the Kennedy as I have. Thanks again Russ for the Photos hopefully they attach without problems.
