If You Were Me, Would You.... (Crossover Question)

Attempt to crossover a 1992 Topps Stadium Club Brett Favre card that is in a GAI 9.5 holder? I know most of you will say to crack it out and resubmit it, but if I do that, and it doesn't come back a 10, I will be out a lot of money. If it were some $10 or $20 card, I wouldn't worry about it so much, but this is potentially a $500 swing (which I know isn't alot for some of you vintage guys, but I don't have alot of money to begin with).

I understand the politics involved with sending a GAI card to PSA. I would be just as lucky going to the local casino and dropping $15 into a slot machine. I know few have had success but most come back as evid. trim.

This card has a print spot on the reverse, and from what I understand, this isn't uncommon with late 80s early 90s cards. What is PSAs view on this, and how do they take it into grading (given that it is on the reverse, and not the front)? There are also 2 imperfections on the gold foil. How does PSA handle that as well? I will try to get a decent scan posted sometime this week.

What I want is a 10, and I can wait until one pops up on the bay, and try to resell this one (at least get out what I have into it) at that point (or hold onto it until after Brett retires). My overall goal is to have one of every rookie (I have almost all of them now), and a few others that catch my eye. Of course, the 92 TSC catches everyone's eye.

All opinions welcome. Thanks everyone!

Your only chance is to crack it. They won't cross it (or even close) on principle.

IN GENERAL, I would only try crossing over a GAI 9.5 w/ bgs at a show since I've read so many reports on here of psa holding a "grudge" against GAI. Then, if I wanted a psa 10, I'd buy one after selling the bgs 9.5.

But, BGS, like PSA, is strict on surfaces, so I'm not sure if your card would cross over based on your description.

I'm in the same position. I have an 84' Fleer Clemens that's been graded 9.5 by GAI. Not sure if I should take the chance and crack it for resubmittal. If I attempt a crossover with the slab, I'm concerned by bias on the grader's part. Don't care what anyone says, bias is part of human nature.

I also have a 2000 SP Authentic Brady that's been graded 9.0 by BGS that I think should grade higher, but anything lower than a PSA 10 wouldn't be worth my while. I could crack and resubmit to either BGS or PSA, but I'm concerned about them mishandling it or getting the same ol' grade. The sub-grades as it stands now are superb from a selling standpoint (as far as BGS 9.0's go), just missing BGS 9.5 GEM Mint by a mere .5 (10 centering, 9.0 corners, 9.0 edges, 9.5 surfaces). I'm disputing the corner grade as I think it looks great under magnification. I must have caught the grader while he was having a bad day.
  • What is the successful crossover rate for a BGS card compared to a GAI or SGC card (assume modern cards)? I understand not being able to see the surface while in a holder. I have cracked out a couple that look great in the holder, and no where near as nice once it got out.

I only ask about the BGS because I have a BGS 9.5 1991 Wild Card Favre 20 Stripe (1 of 2) that I would rather have in a PSA holder. I am just trying to get a gauge of what my chances are before I pull the trigger on it.

Thanks for the replies thus far!
  • I have some I'm looking to crossover as well without cracking it open.
What is the cost? What is the average time?
  • I would look for a PSA 10 and buy it, but remember your 10 MAY not look as good as your 9.5 in regards to centering. We have all seen borderline 10s in 10 holders. When your looking to split hairs so to say, you HAVE to buy the card not the holder. GAI is selling for more and more, and vintage is getting very close if not equal to PSA. I talked with a very large dealer the other day and he told me they don't shy away from GAI (or SGC) simply because they feel their grading standards are very consistant since they have only been around a few years. With PSA having been in business for much longer, he has seen their grading standards tighten up the past several years, so if your just buying the holder it may not be as nice as you think. This generalization may be true. Having said that, PSA is still the slab that brings the most money mostly due to the set registry and name recognition. Do not send in the slab, there is NOOOOOO way PSA is going to put a competitors 9.5 into a 10 holder. not going to happen. Sell the GAI 9.5 after your convinced you have a better card in a PSA 10 holder if that is what your after.

best of luck with your problem.

Your best bet would be to just purchase a PSA 10. Chances are, the Favre you have is definitely trimmed and will be caught by PSA if you submit it to them.

Cracking a gem mint graded card out of a PSA, SGC, BAI or even BGS seems foolish to me unless you don't really care about the money you have into it. If you really need it in a PSA holder send it to them in it's holder along with the $20 and hope they have mercy on you. When it comes back you either will have your 10, or at least still have a GAI 9.5.
  • i grade alot with with bgs & they seem to crossover gai cards easily then psa.
